Gleeson: “It will take an almighty effort”

Leinster Senior Hurling Championship

Antrim v Dublin

Date: Saturday 11 May

Time: 4pm

Brendan McTaggart speaks with Darren Gleeson ahead of the Saffrons Leinster Championship show down with Dublin in Parnell Park.

January 14th 2024 – Antrim v Dublin in the Walsh Cup at Parnell Park. The Saffrons are back there again on Saturday in the Leinster SHC round robin 3

After the euphoria of Corrigan and a first championship win against Wexford, Antrim and Darren Gleeson have their sights firmly set on Dublin.  With the taste for a championship scalp still fresh in the Saffrons, they are hoping for more of the same against a side who need no introduction.

But, if we’re being honest, ‘more of the same’ probably won’t cut it on Saturday afternoon.  It’s going to take that Wexford performance and more if the Saffrons are to record a first win over the Dubs in 14 years and you have to go back a further 11 years (1999) since we last recorded a win in Parnell Park.

Daunting if not scary statistics but runs like these have to come to an end at some stage and the manner of the win against the Slaneysiders, a win on Saturday would further underline the progress being made with the hurl within the county.

When we spoke with Gleeson to get a preview ahead of the Dublin game, he was keen to park the Wexford match and performance.  He did say, though: “It was great for us as a group.  It was a tough week after the performance against Kilkenny but we knew that if we got those lads who returned more game time then you’d see a different Antrim team.

In that game against Wexford in Corrigan, we looked sharper and stronger.

“But look, that game is done now and we have another challenge ahead.  Dublin are a side we know well but with all the results, this Championship has been blown wide open now.  Wexford bounced back with a super win against Galway.”

Niall McKenna in action against the Dubs in the Walsh Cup at Parnell Park in January

That game against Wexford was made more remarkable with the likes of James McNaughton and Keelan Molloy returning and putting in a serious shift.  The man that had caught the eyes of the country after that game however was Gerard Walsh with an outstanding performance and a clinker of a sideline cut with the game in the melting pot.  For the Rossa man to last the entirety of the game was a tip of the hat in the direction of the Saffron Strength & Conditioning set up.  Gleeson praised the efforts of the players in that regard and what Brendan Murphy and Thomas Rogan have brought to the backroom team: “I knew what Gerard was capable off along with the rest who came back.  It’s down to the preparation and rehab these lads go through.  By the time they’re done with rehab, they’re back to being match ready, the wonders of modern science in the strength and conditioning the go through.

“We have youth coming through with the likes of Joe McLaughlin, Cormac McKeown, Sean McKay, Rauiri McCormick, Rory McCloskey, Fred McCurry and Aodhan McGarry.  Those lads are all getting the experience of playing at a high level and training with elite players.  The u20s had a rough year but the talent coming through there has been a huge bonus and has definitely added to our squad this year.”

The Dubs are unbeaten with two late goals earning a share of the points against Wexford in the first match before they saw off Carlow in the Netwatch Cullen Park.  It’s another sizeable task and one that Gleeson knows will be massive: “It will take an almighty effort, that’s for sure.

“If you look at us against Dublin these last few years, we were never in the game going into the championship minutes apart from the championship in Corrigan last year and the league.  We need to be in the game after 55 or even 60 minutes, give ourselves the chance to push on and hopefully that added belief got from the Wexford game will help us get over the line.

“We know each other inside out.  Will either of us really do anything differently from what we’ve been doing?

“They’re in a great position.  A win against us would probably seal that third position in the group, they’ll be fired up for sure.

“We need to focus on our own individual roles and we’ll get the rewards as a team.”

With some players coming through the game but sustaining niggles, the 15 for Saturday’s championship encounter is far from set.  Despite his heroics in the second half against Wexford, Gleeson said ‘it was a miracle James McNaughton played in the second half nevermind put in the type of performance he did’.  Gleeson continued: “We have a few knocks and niggles.  We’re leaving a few calls until the last minute but it was pleasing to see Paul (Boyle) back out on the pitch, for sure.  He looks to have hit the ground running, much like the likes of Gerard (Walsh) against Wexford and Conal Bohill.  He’s come back from a significant hamstring injury but he’s in great shape.

Antrim’s Conor Boyd

“Mick (Bradley) is a concern at the moment.  He’s got a bit of a problem there with his achillies so we’re seeing how he recovers and giving him every opportunity to get right.” Dublin are a side who Antrim have come up against on so many occasions in recent memory that you can steadily see improvements and progress.  They are a side who, if we get it right, we can certainly match up well against – much like Wexford.  Maybe the difference was the Corrigan Park effect?  The Antrim manager said that with the stakes that are on the line and the nature of this years Leinster Championship, he would love to see a large vocal following for his side in Parnell and the other matches the Saffrons are involved in: “It would be amazing to see a big Saffron support in Parnell.  The minors are playing in the Leinster ‘B’ final against Carlow in O’Toole Park at 1pm and the Celtic Challenge lads are playing Limerick in Abbotstown at 12pm.  I’d encourage as many as possible to try and take in a couple of these games and give the minors support

Sterling performance sees Tir na nOg claim the points

ACFL Division 1

Tir na nOg 2-9 St. Gall’s 2-7

Tir na nOg produced another sterling performance to overcome the challenge of a strong St. Gall’s at Whitehill on Wednesday night.

The Milltown side arrived in Randalstown hoping to get back to winning ways after suffering their first defeat of the season to Portglenone last week but came up against a Tir na nOg side who had other ideas.

The sides were level on a number of occasions but it was St. Gall’s who led 1-4 to 0-4 at the interval before moving four ahead on the restart and seemingly on their way to victory.

A Daragh Fagan goal, 8 minutes into the second half turned the game in favour of the Whitehill side and another from Ciaran O’Neill with three minutes remaining put them in pole position.

The visitors came back with a goal of their own late in the contest but Tir na nOg were not going to let this major scalp slip from their grip as they held on for a two point win.

It was Ciaran O’Neill who got the home side on their way with an early point with Josh Higgins and Daragh Fagan adding to their tally by the 11th minute.

A goal from Tiernan Keenan edged the visitors 1-2 to 0-3 ahead after 21 minutes and with Daniel Quinn and Niall O’Neill prominent, the Milltown Row side moved four ahead early in the second half.

Fagan from a pointed free and then a goal brought it all square with 8 minutes of the new half gone before Josh Higgins game them the lead from a point in the 11th minute.

Eamon Og McAllister added another before Ciaran O’Neill found the net for the Randalstown side’s second goal and Christy Sheerin and O’Neill added late points before Daniel Quinn replied from the penalty spot with time almost up.

This win moves Tir na nOg onto 9 points from 7 starts and they sit seventh in the table alongside All Saints.

Despite these two recent defeats St. Gall’s sit a point above Tir na nOg with 10 points from seven outings but will be keen to get back to winning ways when Lamh Dhearg visit on the 15th May.

McAteer goal sends Creggan on way to victory

ACFL Division 1

Kickhams 5-11 to Rossa 0-05

A brilliant goal by Dominic McAteer in the 5th minute of the opening half sent Kickham’s Creggan on their way to a facile victory over a depleted Rossa side in Creggan on Wednesday night

On a great night for football it was Rossa who registered the opening point in the 2nd minute before Conor Small replied with his first of the evening quickly followed by a brilliant individual goal from Dominic Mc Ateer.

Colm Fleming responded with Rossa’s second point but slowly Kickham’s took control with Kealan McCann kicking 2 excellent long range points and then on 12 minutes Jake Mc Ateer ghosted in to the edge of the box and blasted to the net.

Conor Small, Sean Duffin, Joe and Dominic McAteer were proving a handful in attack and with Paddy McAuley controlling midfield the home side really upped the tempo and in an 8 minute spell Conor Small helped himself to 2 goals and 2 points.

Colm Fleming scored the third and last point of the half for Rossa before Dominic Mc Ateer hit his second goal in the 29th minute to leave the score at half time Kickhams 5-05 to Rossa 0-03.

Given their first half display it was always going to be difficult to keep that tempo going in the second half but the hard working Tiernan McLarnon added 2 points in the 6th and 15th minutes and Conor Small added 2 more points by the end of the third quarter.

Rossa kept plugging away and were rewarded with 2 more Colm Fleming points but Kickham’s two danger men Dominic McAteer and Conor Small kicked the last 2 points of the evening to leave their side convincing winners

Portglenone see off local rivals Ahoghill to maintain unbeaten start

ACFL Division 1

Roger Casements 0 – 16   St Marys, Ahoghill 0 – 06

A large crowd assembled at Kelly Park Portglenone to view the latest instalment of a local derby between the hosts and neighbouring Ahoghill. Though the length of the league table separated the sides, traditionally that has meant little, with players knowing each other so well from the days of the previous amalgamation between the two clubs.

A minutes silence was impeccably observed in memory of the late Mickey Kelly, followed by a warm round of applause for the large contribution he made to local GAA over a long period.

When referee Darren McKeown got the game underway both teams probed and built their way into the contest, and it was a full six minutes before Michael Hagan split the posts to open the scoring, in favour of the hosts.

The opening half was memorable mostly for some excellent long range score taking, points that would grace any occasion from Aidan McAleese (2) but also a brace from the lively Oisin Doherty and two more from the impressive Michael Hagan, as the hosts ran up a sizeable lead going into the break.

James O Connell got two back for the visitors, long range efforts, one from play, the other a free form all of fifty yards.

Another O Connell free in the opening minute of the second half narrowed the gap to four, and veteran observers of this fixture knew that this was not insurmountable. As it was though, Portglenone pushed on with the next four scores to open up the gap to eight – a mountain that Ahoghill never looked likely of reducing. Doherty was again on the board, with Ronan Kelly finishing off the best team move of the evening before Aidan McAleese landed two more of his trademarks from all of fifty yards.

Although Boris O Connell, Tom McGlone and Finbar O Neill took the fight right back to Casements, the visitors struggled to breakdown a resolute Portglenone defence where Ronan Delargy broke even, negating the influence of the visitors main threat, James OConnell.

Conceding fewer scores than any other team in the league to date, the home defence is proving to form a sound base from which to launch their attacks through a lively hard running half back line.

James O Connell did manage five points to his credit, three from play, but struggled for a playmaker to play off him, as Kevin O`Kane and Shane Delargy were on hand to sweep up anything that resembled a scoring opportunity for Cloney.

Impressive half back line duo Ruairi Hagan and Caolan Tierney chipped in to maintain a healthy lead for the current league champions, as Micheal Hagan secured the pre match target of a double digit victory just as Darren McKeown, who refereed this contest better than most in recent years, blew his long whistle.

Ahoghill are around the basement of this division once more, but they know how and when to pick their battles and tonight wasn’t one of them. If any club knows about survival and how to regroup pre championship, it’s the men from Cloney.

For John McKeever this was another satisfying performance despite having half a dozen usual staters missing, and a chance for a few squad players to show what they can offer as John continues to rotate players and build a squad mentality.

Patrick Graffin and Michael Og Kelly made their seasonal debuts, neither looking an inch out of place in a well-oiled Casements machine.

For the winners Shane Delargy was superb, maintaining his impressive start to the season, at the heart of a resolute defence where everyone played their part.

Enda Lynn continues to provide the fulcrum of attack, around which the footballing and sharpshooting talent of Oisin Doherty, Michael Hagan, and Aidan McAleese and others come to the fore, as the season concludes its opening quarter.
