St. John’s finally break their duck

ACFL Division One

St John’s 3-13

O’Donovan Rossa 1-9

It’s taken a while but St. John’s finally grabbed their first win of the season when they proved too good for old adversaries, Rossa at Corrigan Park on Wednesday night.

The Corrigan Park side dictated matters from throw in and raced into an early lead as their visitors struggled from early in the contest and after 15 minutes the Johnnies had built up a substantial lead.

On a night of mixed emotions, Patrick McBride led the way with five points, putting in a superb shift despite the passing of his father the previous day.

From their first attack, Sean Wilson found Conhuir Adams who fired over to give St. John’s the lead.

A good start became even better as Conor McEvoy set up Conall McGlade who palmed the ball to the net to move the hosts four ahead.

Goal number two arrived just five minutes later and again, the direct approach worked as Stephen Tierney went long from a free to Enda McGurk who found Andy McGowan inside to steady and thump home.

It was all St John’s and after Oisin McAuley kicked a point, Adams thumped a super score with the outside of his boot but his appeal for a 2 pointer was waved aside.

It didn’t matter as St. John’s continued to dominate against a Rossa side who were struggling to put a move together and a Patrick McBride free pushed them 2-4 to 0-0 ahead after 15 minutes.

The Shaw’s Road side looked in serious trouble but grabbed a lifeline as Eoin Fleming’s broke a challenge with his shot rebounding of the crossbar but the ball rebounded into his arms and he opted to pop inside to Diarmaid Rogan to steady and hit the net.

Rossa failed to build on this as the Johnnies finished the half well as Adams kicked a free and after Enda McGurk landed a point, Adams curled over his fourth of the half with the left boot to put his team into a 2-7 to 1-0 lead at the short whistle.

The visitors needed a good start to the second period and they got it as Eoghan McMenamin kicked an early score and Conall McDonald added another from a free before Richie Gowdy thumped over a two and suddenly the visitors appeared to have come to life.

McBride hit back with a trademark point to the right of the posts before

Eoin Fleming replied for the visitors, but points from Sean Wilson and a McGlade free saw the Johnnies move 2-10 to 1-5 ahead as the game entered final quarter.

Another McBride point mopved the Whiterock side 10 ahead for the second time in the game and when the same player a superb 2pointer they were back in total control.

It was a long way back for Rossa, but Diarmaid Rogan wasn’t far away from grabbing a second goal as a shot went across the face of goal and just to the wrong side of the posts.

They did pull a couple of scores back from a McDonald free and then goalkeeper Niall Crossan joined the attack to thump over.

McDonald kicked a two-point free as the game moved into injury time to reduce the gap to six, but St John’s finished on top as Aaron Bradley placed Oisin McAuley to fire high to the net and perhaps fittingly, McBride had the final say to put a gloss on the victory.

Five point win for All Saints in Crumlin

ACFL Division 1

Naomh Seamas 2-9 All Saints 1-17

All Saints continued their good run in division 1 of the All County league when they travelled to Crumlin on Wednesday night and recorded a five point win over St. James’ Aldergrove.

Wednesday night’s opponents are no strangers to each other and have met on numerous occasions over the last 15 years in division 2 and in Intermediate championship action.

This year the former division 2 protagonists met for the second time in division 1 following their promotion from the lower grade at the end of 2023 and it was the Ballymena side who added to last year’s win in Ballymena to defeat the Crumlin men for the second time.

Michael McCarry, Ciaran Campbell and Sean McVeigh shot the visitors into an early three point lead as they opened at pace before Seamus McGarry opened the Aldergrove account with a point in the 7th minute.

Michael ‘Gooch’ McCarry moved the visitors three ahead once more but a minute later Ronan Hanna fielded a long ball from mid-field and turned Peter McNicholl before firing past Conor Brennan in the All Saints goals and the sides were level.

McGarry from a well struck ‘45’ briefly edged the Crumlin side ahead before a McCarry converted free and a fine point from play by Benny McDonnell edged the visitors ahead once more with 18 minutes gone.

Sean McVeigh increased that lead with a point and then the big full-forward rose to flick a Conor Brennan ‘45’ to the net to move the Ballymena side five ahead.

Back came the men in Red and Brian McQuillan sent over a fine point and Ronan McKillop for All Saints and the sweet striking Seamus McGarry exchanged further minors to leave four between the sides as half time approached.

Aldergrove looked in a bit of trouble but they struck with a vengeance late in the half as Ronan Hamill placed Rian McCarthy who fired to the net from close range to leave his side trailing by the minimum as Kevin Parke sounded his half time whistle.

Manger Bradley called for greater effort and intensity from his side at half time and his call seemed to have done the trick as the excellent Connell Lemon struck a 2 pointer and added another from close range to move the visitors four ahead after two minutes of the new half.

A well struck free from Ronan Hanna raised an Orange flag at the other end to close the gap to three once more but the men in black were continuing to break at speed as McCarry replied at the other end.

Declan Gough and substitute Gerard Mallon responded with a double for the home side to leave just one in it again and it looked like the momentum had swung in favour of Aldergrove but it would prove to be their final score.

Instead it was All Saints who seemed to find that extra gear going down the home straight as substitute Paidin Mitchell fisted over before Emmet Killough struck an excellent point to move All Saint four ahead.

Connell Lemon, who was excellent throughout, looked certain to add his side’s second goal but Oisin McGarry advanced to make a blocking save but Benny McDonnell pointed a free and Mitchell added his second of the evening to leave the visitors winners by five.

This win sees the Slemish Park side climb to joint second place with five wins from six starts and they will be well pleased with their start to the season.

Michael Read, Matty Downey and Cal O’Brien were solid in defence for the winners while Emmet Killough and Peter McReynolds held sway at mid-field.

Ciaran Campbell provided the link from defence to attack and was always available to receive the ball while the experienced pair of Sean McVeigh and Michael McCarry continue to defy their age as they provided important scores in attack.

Deaglan Gough, Eoin Gough, Brian McQuillan, Seamus McGarry and Ronan Hanna were best for a St. James’ side who remain well placed in the league despite Wednesday night’s defeat.

Young Antrim stars on show as Cushendall beat Dunloy

Above – Eva McNeill who scored eight points in Cushendall’s win over Dunloy in the Senior Camogie League

Antrim Camogie League – Division 1

Dunloy 0-09 Cushendall 3-18

Last Sunday’s player of the match in Antrim’s All Ireland Minor A Shield final, Eva McNeill, played a starring role again on Tuesday evening when her club Cushendall beat Dunloy in the Division 1 of the Antrim Camogie League at Pearse Park.

With both teams short their county players and in Dunloy’s case a few more on top of that, the depth of the panels were well tested. McNeill carried on where she left off on Sunday, hitting eight points in total, as did Antrim captain Amy McAlister who scored 1-1.

Cushendall led by 0-10 to 0-05 at half time and pushed on in the second half Brogan Abram and Cara O’Boyle adding goals, while Orlagh O’Hara grabbed four points and Siobhan McKillop two.

Caoimhe Molloy led the scoring honour for Dunloy, hitting all of her team’s five points in the opening half, while another of Antrim’s stars from Sunday Aoibhe McAllister grabbed two for the Cuchullains and Eimhear McMullan got one.

Two ex Tower hurlers passed away in recent weeks

By Denis O’Hara

TWO members of the first hurling team to represent St MacNissi’s College, Garron Tower, in Ulster Colleges’ combat, have sadly passed away in recent weeks.
Denis McKillop and fellow Cushendall day student Alex McCollam died aged 86 and 87 respectively.
McKillop, from Tavnahan, Glenaan, passed away in Antrim Area Hospital a few weeks ago.

Denis McKIllop RIP

He was once the goalkeeper for Antrim Minor and Junior hurling teams, and also the first goalkeeper in a Garron Tower team to debut in Ulster Colleges’ hurling competition during the 1951-’52 season
His funeral Mass and Burial were held (on Tuesday April 1) at St Mary’s Cushendall.
An avid historian, Denis lived for a time with his family in the Feystown area of Glenarm.
Born in November 1938 in Glenaan, he attended the local Primary School on Glenaan Road before securing entry to St MacNissi’s College in September 1951.
Forever devoted to the game of hurling he was selected, after trials, by the late Fr Paddy McKavanagh to the Tower’s first team – and in 1956 gained county honours with Antrim Minors.
He always bemoaned the fact his ‘minor days’ were confined to one session, even though winning the Ulster title – and was included in the squad for the 1956 All Ireland semi-final against Tipperary at Croke Park.
He was then 17 but his 18th birthday fell outside the January 1st ruling.
Later, he played one season in the Antrim Junior team, as goalkeeper.
Denis, who spent his closing years in Cushendall, enjoyed good times in club hurling affairs with Cushendun Emmet’s – where he impressed as a cornerback – and then with Cushendall Ruairi Og as their goalkeeper..
He also had an association with the Latharna Og team in Larne and the Shane O’Neill hurling club in Glenarm.

Alex McCollam spent one year at St MacNissi’s College, joining in 1951.
Fr Paddy McKavanagh, the College’s first hurling team manager, included Alex in the opening season action before the Cushendsll pupil left the Tower and joined Ballymena Academy.
Following some years working in Belfast he emigrated to Western Australia, where his son Declan is a club professional golfer. Alex Died at Perth, Western Australia.

Maguire’s late point earns the Paddies a share of the spoils

Antrim Hurling League – Division 2

Carey Faughs 0-17 Sarsfields 1-14

A point deep into injury time from Jay Maguire was enough to give the Paddies a share of the spoils, in a lively and entertaining encounter AT Ballyvoy on Saturday.  The visitors held the upper hand in the early exchanges and held a 0-11 to 0-07 at the break, courtesy of five points from Aghagallon footballer Enda McCartan, with Finn Jemfrey, Oisin Coleman and Calan McKernan getting their other scores. Carey never really got settled into the game, but remained in contention with scores from John McMride,  Darren McGowan,  Conal McGlynn,  Calum Cane, Conlith McKinley and Conor McBride.

The second half saw an improved Carey, and three Conor McBride points had the sides level, but an opportunist Osin Coleman goal on the 45 th minute gave the west Belfast men back their three point margin.

Conal McGlynn with three points on the bounce and a Con McKinley point gave the Faughs back the lead with seven minutes remaining, but Jemfrey equalised for the Paddies, only for McBride and McGlynn points to restore Carey’s one point advantage.

It looked like the home side had done enough to secure both points, but Sarsfields never gave up and Maguire cancelled out in stoppage time to earn his team a share of the spoils.
