Loughiel power home against Portglenone

Antrim Camogie League – Division 1

Portglenone 0-5 Loughgiel 5-22

Loughgiel had too much fire-power for the Geraldines in Tuesday evening’s league game in Portglenone, winning by 5-22 to 0-5, despite the best efforts of the hard working home team.

The Shamrock opened with seven points without reply through Annie Lynn (3), Shanna Deery, Ciara Boyle, Christine Laverty and Emma McAllister before Deery got her team’s first goal on 18 minutes. Emma McAllister added another point before Shannon Darragh got her team’s opening score. However Loughgiel pushed on again and by half time were 1-12 to 0-1 ahead.

Loughgiel’s second goal came from Emma McAllister just three minutes into the second half, but Portglenone kept battling and Aoibhinn McCloskey and Shannon Darrgah pulled back points in the ninth and tenth minutes. Chloe Higgins, Emma McAllister and Anna McKillop came back with points before McCloskey struck again on sixteen minutes and she got her fourth point of the game on twenty-two minutes. However Loughgiel were still piling on the scores at the other end and they added three more goals in the late stages to end up emphatic winners.

Rossa beat Brídíní Óga for first win

Antrim Camogie League Division 1

Brídíní Óga Glenravel 1-4 O’Donovan Rossa 1-13

ROSSA picked up their first win of the season in Fr Maginn Park Glenravel on Tuesday evening, comfortably beating the home side by nine points.

The experienced trio of Máirín Quinn, Orla McCaul and particularly Natalie McGuinness were the main architects of the Rossa victory against a young Glenravel side who fought well over the hour.

Rossa served a warning of their intent with Caitlin Armstrong pointing in the first 20 seconds. They were wide with a few more efforts before Natalie McGuinness raced through for her first point.

In their very first attack in the 9th minute, the home side scored an excellent team goal, Eimhear McAleenan and Shauna McDonnell combining for Ashling Millar to fire across Michelle Prett.

However Rossa quickly responded with points from Máirín Quinn and Natalie McGuinness (two) to take the lead once again. Although Brídíní Óga hit back with a point from a free, Sophie Erskine fired home a goal for Rossa and they went on to lead by 1-6 to 1-3 at the break despite points in reply from Clodagh McPeake and Shauna McDonnell.

As they had done in the first half, Rossa opened with a quick point this time from Natalie McGuinness who went on to double her first half tally of four points.

Although Eimhear McAleenan pointed in reply, that was to be the home side’s only score of the half with most of the action centred around their half of the pitch.

Brídíní Oga’s next scheduled game in this Division is on July 4th against Ruairí Óg, while Rossa have a re-fixed game with Portglenone in three weeks.

Dunloy make it three wins in a row

Antrim Camogie League – Division 1

Dunloy picked up a third win of the season after defeating Portlgenone by eleven points in what was a dogged game at Pearse Park on Tuesday evening. The Geraldine’s girls set themselves up in a real defensive format to try and suffocate any space in their back line and midfield and make it much more difficult to concede scores. To be fair to Portglenone it worked out well for them as it limited the number of chances that Dunloy had for shots on goal and in and around their box forcing them to go much longer.

The visitors opened the scoring with a free from outside of the 21 but that was the last time they had their noses in front as Dunloy pushed into a six point lead midway through the half. Points Katie and Caoimhe Molly ensured that Dunloy gained the lead that they wouldn’t lose. Further scores from Bronach Magill, Katie Molloy and a goal from a long range free from Caoimhe Molloy gave the home side a 1-10 to 0-01 lead at the interval. The second half was much the same as the first though to Portglenone’s credit they pushed out a bit more and created much more shooting chances compared to the four they only had in the first half. A goal from a penalty and one from play brought them back to within 6 points of Dunloy but a brace of points from substitute Cassie McArthur and six between the Molloy sisters ensured that the league points would be going to Dunloy. A competitive game between sides with the visitors sticking to their system making it very tough to open them up for goal chances.

For Dunloy it’s a third win on the trot coming up to the break in the league where Loughgiel will be the visitors in two weeks’ time. Portglenone will travel to Tir Na nOg next. Dunloy scorers – Caoimhe Molloy 1-08, Katie Molloy 0-07, Cassie McArthur 0-02, Bronach Magill 0-01

Cushendall power past Ballycastle

Antrim Camogie League – Division 1

Cushendall 5-16 Ballycastle 2-8

Cushendall won Tuesday evening’s top of the table clash in Division 1 of the Antrim Senior Camogie League when they beat Ballycastle by 5-16 to 2-8 at Pair Mhuir.

A goal inside the first minute by full forward Oralgh O’Hara gave the home side the perfect start, but points from Riana McBride and Ellen McIntosh in the next two minutes closed the gap to a single point. That was as close at the ‘Town’ would get though as the Ruairis hit 1-3 without reply inside five minutes to put a bit of daylight between themselves and the visitors. Anna McNeill started it with a point, before corner forward Orlaith McAlister got her team’s second goal on five minutes. O’Hara added a point from a free and McAlister one from play to open the gap to 2-4 to 0-2 by the seventh minute.

An exchange of points from Ballycastle’s Aine Donnelly and Cushendall’s Orlaith McAlister kept the gap at eight, but Ballycastlle got back into contention with a Riana McBride point and an Elen McIntosh goal, but points from Dervla Cosgrove and Orlagh O’Hara were followed by goal number three for the Dall by corner forward Orlaith McCurry.

With half time fast approaching Ballycastle came back with a goal and a point from full forward Janey McIntosh to close the gap back to four, but three on the trot from the home side deep in injury time from Orlagh O’Hara (2) and Dervla Cosgrove gave Cushendall a seven point lead at the break, 3-9 to 2-5.

The high scoring nature of the game continued after the restart as Riana McBride and Aine Donnelly pointed to close the gap to five, but Ballycastle would score just one more time in the final 25 minutes as Cushendall took control.

Points from Orlaith McAlister, Orlagh O’Hara and Dervla Cosgrove were followed by goal number four through Orlaith McAlister in the 42nd minute and at this stage the only thing in question was the size of the winning margin. With ten minutes left to play Aine Donnelly got Ballycastle’s last point of the game, but the home side finished with a flourish as Orlagh O’Hara grabbed three more points, Orlaith McAlister got goal number five, while Cara O’Boyle got the last score of the game.
