Football League Fixtures & Previews Wed 21st June

Another full list of fixtures in all 3 divisions are scheduled for Wednesday evening as all of the divisions draw near conclusion.

There are no fixtures on Sunday (25th June) as all roads from the county lead to Dublin as the Saffrons have earned a place in the semi-final stages of the Tailteann Cup where they will line out against Meath at Croke Park…

Wed 21st June

(all games at 7.30pm)

Division One A

Casement’s Portglenone v St Mary’s Aghagallon

Portglenone have led the way in the division since flag-fall and remain out in front of the chasing pack and the Bannsider’s look favourites to claim the division one league title.

John Mc Keever’s charges made no mistake in their first game in the A section with a win at Lamh Dearg where they emerged 1-18 to 1-05 winners and pole position retained.

St Mary’s have been going well this year but are now six points behind Portglenone following defeat to Cargin on Sunday and the Toome side now move into second place

Aghagallon will hope to get back into winning ways but although Pete Mc Grath’s charges are not to be discounted, a home win and a step closer to the league title does look likely.

St Mary’s Ahoghill v Lamh Dhearg

St Mary’s lost to the visiting Creggan last time out but the Clooney men still retain 4th place in the table.

Lamh Dhearg have been a bit incocistent this term and they lost on their own sod last time when Casement’s recorded a good win and they will be hoping for better this time.

Ahoghill are more than capable at home and they may well take a full return of points from this one.

Kickham’s Creggan v Erin’s Own Cargin

A local derby affair as keen rivals, and near neighbours Creggan and Cargin come together on the formers Staffordstown road sward.

The Kickham’s are holders of the division 1 league title but have struggled in the early part of this season before a late burst saw them claim a place in the top 6.

They will struggle to retain that title this season but will be looking forward to the visit of their closest rivals.

Cargin have endured a quiet start to the league to date but the Toome men have enjoyed the return of several injure players recently and have stepped up their performances as a win up at Aghagallon on Sunday bears testament.

Games between these sides are always fiercely contested and this one should be no different with home advantage possibly swinging it Creggan’s way.

Division One B

O’ Donovan Rossa v St Gall’s

Things in division 2B couldn’t be much tighter with Rossa sitting second bottom with 9 points but only a point behind third place St. Gall’s who have a game in hand. With the bottom twoin this division set to be relegated competition for the points is certain to be keen.

Rossa lost last day to St Enda’s and Hugh Mc Gettigan’s charges are certain to be feeling the pressure and will be hoping for a win from the visit of St. Gall’s.

St Gall’s were not involved on Sunday but Niall Burns and Paddy Mc Shane will have the Milltown men ready as they travel to Rossa Park.

This may well be another close, hard fought affair with ground advantage possibly tipping the balance in favour of Rossa.

St John’s v St Enda’s

Both St John’s and St Enda’s have opened their account in section B with the Johnnies proving a tad too strong for Moneyglass down at Marian Hill whilst St Enda’s claimed the points over the visiting Rossa.

The pressure may well be eased at Corrigan with St John’s having amassed a hefty 14 points but St Enda’s have only ten points to date and need the win.

St Enda’s will travel in search of the points but nothing comes easy at Corrigan and a home win is anticipated.

Tir na nOg v St Ergnat’s Moneyglass

This all South West affair sees Tir Na nOg welcome Moneyglass to Whitehill and the home side really need a win if they are to climb away from the bottom of the table. The home side have only 8 points to date with Rossa on 9 and St Enda’s on 10 and a win is really required.

St Ergnat’s Moneyglass had a good league campaign and although they lost out to St John’s in their first phase B game they have acquired 12 points to date and may well gain another couple in this one.

Division Two A

Con Magees Glenravel v Gort na Mona

Con Magees Glenravel had a good win over Glenavy on Sunday and barring accidents, look set to take the title. Joe Cassidy’s charges have produced the goods for much of the season and they should record another win from the visit of Gort na Mona

St Joseph’s Glenavy v All Saint’s Ballymena

Having led the league for most of the season All Saints have faltered lately and dropped another point when they were held to a draw by the visiting Michael Davitt’s on Sunday.

That was a setback for the Ballymena side and they will look for better here as they visit Chapel Hill to face Glenavy.

Glenavy enjoyed a good start to the season but their form has dipped since the split and they have fallen out of contention in the race for promotion.

All Saints will travel with intent but they will need to get back to the form they displayed earlier in the season if they are to beat a St. Joseph’s team with nothing to lose.

St James Aldergrove v Michael Davitt’s

Aldergrove remain in the race for honours and the greater prize of promotion but the Crumlin men remain a couple of points in arrears of the front running Glenravel and one point behind All Saint’s but with a game in hand.

The Crumlin men cannot afford any slip up here and although the Fall’s road side are out of the promotion race they will ask questions of their hosts.

Division Two B

St Paul’s v Patrick Sarsfields

Sarsfield’s just missed out on a place in the A section but are well clear of the relegation zone and they will hope for the addition of another couple of points as neighbours St Paul’s visit but this one could be close.

St Paul’s have shown a lot of improvement recently but the home side might just shade it.

Cuchullian’s Dunloy v Kickham’s Ardoyne

Cuchullian’s Dunloy gained a welcome victory over the visiting St Teresa’s last time but yjey face an Ardoyne side who have been excellent this year.

If the home side retain such positivity they may well add to their points tally but if not then Ardoyne can gain the day.

St Patrick’s Lisburn v St Teresa’s

St Patricks Lisburn have struggled this season with only a single point to show for gallant efforts and St. Teresa’s should add to their problems as they look set for a return to division three for 2024.

Division Three

Laochra Loch Lao v Pearses

Laochra Loch Lao have enjoyed an excellent season and face a Pearses side sitting one place above them in the table and this one could go either way.

Cardinal O’ Donnell’s v St Agnes

Cardinal O’ Donnell’s have had an excellent 2023 season and sit in second place behind Rasharklin and should continue with another win to keep the pressure on  the Dreen side should they slip in the run in to the league title

St Mary’s Rasharkin v Wolfe Tones

Rasharkin remain unbeaten in the league and it is difficult to envisage North Belfast based Wolfe Tones halting the Dreen men in their positive stride.

Cumann na mBunscol half-time games

Children from St. Mary’s Rasharkin, St. Johns, St. Gall’s and Lamh Dhearg were given the opportunity to display their skills during the interval of the Antrim v Carlow, Tailteann Cup game at Corrigan Park on Sunday and they didn’t disappoint.

The Antrim players of the future gave a fine exhibition of Gaelic Football and were a credit to their clubs and coaches and the future looks bright for these children if they continue to practice and listen to their mentors.

Lisburn beaten by Crossgar in Flynn Cup final

Danske Bank Flynn Cup final

St Colmcille’s Crossgar 2-4 St Patrick’s Lisburn 3-0

A point from Rian Mahon five minutes from the end of a closely-fought game in Darragh Cross on Monday morning delivered a first ever Danske Bank Flynn Cup for St Colmcille’s Crossgar.

There were opportunities for St Patrick’s Lisburn to grab a draw, or even a win, in the final moments, but the Crossgar defence rallied well around Aaron Keenan, Finn O’Prey and Oliver Quinn while goalie Ryan Dornan pulled off three excellent saves over the course of the game.

All Lisburn’s scores came from the boot of David McNally. He was excellent as was midfielder Charlie McGrandles and Reece Denver-Largey in defence but they were badly in need of a little magic from Eoin Morris who had a big part in the school’s recent victory in Corn Cúchulainn. Morris damaged a thumb in the warm-up and could take no part in the game.

Lisburn had beaten Crossgar in the group stages before Easter and then took out St Mary’s Irvinestown in the quarter-final. They were however rather fortunate to come out on the right side of a 2-8 to 3-4 score-line in the semi-final against St Joseph’s Ravenhill, but on Monday their luck ran out in Darragh Cross.

Crossgar’s Conor Doran got the scoring started with a free, but an excellent finish from McNally put Lisburn ahead. That lead lasted seven minutes before player of the match Orin Casement fired home after a good team move.

Again McNally hit back with his second goal but that was cancelled out just before the break by Casement’s second.

Although Doran clipped over a free at the start of the second half, St Patrick’s earned a penalty soon after and McNally duly completed his hat-trick. Unfortunately it was to be Lisburn’s final score and Orin Casement pulled St Colmcille’s level midway through the half. There was good defence from both teams before Mahon’s winner arrived, but in the end of the day, St Patrick’s will rue a couple of good chances they had to at least bring the game to extra time.

Scorers:

St Colmcille’s: Orin Casement 2-1 (0-1 free), Conor Doran 0-2 (frees), Rian Mahon 0-1

St Patrick’s: David McNally 3-0 (1 pen)

Lynch hat-trick paves the way for Rasharkin victory

ACFL Division 3

St Comghall’s 1-12 Rasharkin 6-9

A Ryan Lynch hat-trick and further goals from Donagh Quigg, Oisin Casey and Tiernan O’Boyle kept the Rasharkin promotion race on course when they visited Antrim on Saturday evening to take on Naomh Comhghall in a game that certainly produced a barrow full of scores.

Lynch, who has been in fine form since his return to the side this season led the way against an Antrtim town side who were in descent scoring score themselves but were too easily penetrated at the other end.

St Comghall’s raced into an early 3 point before Shane Hasson slipped over Rasharkin first score from a free.

The town again pushed it out to 3 before corner back Donagh Quigg hit a much needed major to leave the scores level.

Anothe point for St Comghall’s brought another leveller from Oran McMullan and at this stage of proceedings there was nothing between the sides

Rasharkin began to get on top however and Oisin Casey popped in behind the defence to slip the ball past St Comghall’s  keeper the gap would widen when referee Ryan O’Reilly signalled for a penalty that was sent to the net by Ryan lynch for his first of the evening.

Rasharkin were now 7 clear and looked to be in control but 3 unanswered points from the home side brought deficit back to 4.

Naomh Comhghall were playing some good football and a Shane Hasson pointed free in the 27th minute brought a late rally from the home side who finished the half with 3 unanswered point to leave just one in it at the break.

Half time: Rasharkin 3-03 St Comghall’s 0-11

So with the game finally balanced, the next 30 minutes would test Rasharkin’s resolve and they son faced a more daunting test  with only 5 minutes of second half gone as the home side were awarded a penalty that they tucked away to move into a two point lead.

Rasharkin held their nerve however and replied with had points from a Shane Hasson free and another from substitute Tiernan O’ Boyle to level the scores and these scored seemed to spark the league leaders into life.

Tiernan O’Boyle was having an impact since his introduction and he sent a 45 straight between the posts before Ryan lynch hit the top corner of the Naomh Comhghall net and points from Lynch asnd O’Boyle moved Rasharkin further in front.

The momentum was now very much with the men from Dreen and with 53 minutes gone they were awarded a penalty and again that man Ryan lynch stepped up to apply the finish and complete his hat-trick.

Shane Hasson converted another free before Tiernan O’Boyle sent a rifling shot to the net which would prove to be St. Mary’s final score.

It was done and dusted at this stage however with Naomh Comhghall replying with a consolation point in injury time and Rasharkin’s unbeaten run in tact following this 12 point win.

Rasharkin scorers:

Donagh Quigg 1-00, Oisin Casey 1-00, Ryan Lynch 3-01, Tiernan ‘O’Boyle 1-03 (1f), Shane Hasson 0-04 (4f’s), Oran McMullan 0-01

Moneyglass lift third U14 Championship title in a row

U14 LGFA Championship final

St. Ergnat’s 7-16 St. Gall’s 4-3

There’s no show like a Jo Jo show. At a sun kissed Dunsilly on Thursday night the name on everyone’s lips was Jo Jo Darragh. The talented Moneyglass girl put on an exhibition of forward play that would grace any occasion never mind a championship final. The South West side got off to a blistering start hitting 3-8 to 0-2 in the first fifteen minutes up to the first water break.

If there were any notions, however, that the game was over, a resilient St. Galls put those to bed very quickly. With two long high testing balls launched into the square, came two goals within a minute.

The 1st goal scored by Holly Hilton and all of a sudden it was game on. St Galls pressed again and the second came from the talented Gemma Mullan who also kicked a well taken points in the first half.

Such was Moneyglass strength all over the pitch however that it wasn’t long before they wrestled back control. With Aedin Vallely, Ruby McErlain and JoJo Darragh in fine form the scores flowed.

The second and third quarters were definitely the most competitive with St. Galls hitting a brace of goals in each. 5-10 to 2-3 was the halftime score and at the second water break the gap had narrowed to 5-12 to 4-3 with StGalls girls Aoibhinn Fallon and Jessica Chapman tucking away a goal each and Olivia Whelan and Niamh Ni Muirigh adding points.

But as the game entered the twilight Moneyglass threw the shackles off to run out convincing winners on a score line of 7-16 to 4-3.

St Galls put up a great challenge to the champions and have numerous very talented players and it’s always a good contest when these teams meet.

A great win for the outstanding Moneyglass girls . There seems to be endless talented young players coming through the ranks in this club. Im sure the management  team of Kevin Madden and Ruairi O’Boyle are delighted with the girls performance.
