Kinney goal swings it Armoy’s way

ACHL Division 3

All Saints 0-11 Armoy 1-12

Armoy maintained their place near the top of the division 3 table but they were forced to battle all the way by All Saints, Ballymena at Slemish Park today. Newly promoted All Saints were well in the game throughout and trailed by the minimum with 10 minutes remaining when disaster struck.

Colum Neeson and Eoin Kinney contested a dropping ball into the Ballymena danger area and it broke favourably to the Armoy number 17, Kinney who was first in a race to the ball with All Saints keeper, Ciaran Cassley and his first time kicked shot just crept over the goal line.

It was All Saints who were first off the mark when Cormac Magill pointed them ahead in the 4th minute but points from Eamonn McCaughan and two from Trevor Linton had the Glen Rovers two in front after 9 minutes play as both sides struggled to come to terms with the soft ground conditions.

Damian Gillan cut the arrears to the minimum from a free in the 11th minute with Trevor Linton replying from a free at the other end but a sublime sideline cut from Luke O’Rawe, which sailed directly between the uprights kept Chris Dornan’s side in touch.

The Ballymena side were giving as good as they got and Eoin McGuigan had his goal attempt smartly saved by Conor Devlin in the Armoy goals and Gary Miskella’s follow up was blocked for a ‘65’ which Damian Gillan converted to leave it 0-4 to 0-4 with 23 minutes gone.

Trevor Linton and Thomas Burns responded with points at the other end but another pointed free from Damian Gillan and one from the battling Cormac Magill tied matters once more before Ciaran McKenna edged Armoy one ahead with the final point of the half.

Sharp shooter, Gillan brought his side level again on the restart from a 40 meter free before Emmet O’Hara restored the visitors lead from a fine long range effort and another from Trevor Linton had his side two in front at the end of a low scoring third quarter.

The home side relied through a well worked Liam Cassley point and another from the impressive Gillan had it all square by the 16th minute and at this stage a major upset looked possible but another point from that man Linton and Eoin Kinney’s kicked goal turned it decisively in favour of the men from the Armoy Glen.

The home side pushed hard during the closing stages and were awarded a close range free with Damian Gillan’s effort on goal dealt with and cleared to safety by a well marshalled visitors defence.

This win leaves Glen Rovers in second place with six points from three starts, two behind Cuchullainn Hurling club, Armagh who have played a game more with St. Brigid’s Cloughmills and Con Magee’s, Glenravel both up there in the promotion race.

All Saints have only one win to date in their first season in division 3 but they have been competitive in all their games to date and performed well today but need to get some points on board soon if they are to maintain their division 3 status.

Cloughmills ease to victory in Hannahstown

ACHL Division 3

Lámh Dhearg 0-05-2-24 Cloughmills

Kevin Herron reports from Pairc Lámh Dhearg

Cloughmills remain joint-top of the ACHL Division 3 after they eased to victory over Lámh Dhearg at Hannahstown on Easter Sunday.

It took the visitors six minutes to register their first score in the form of a converted Eoin Dobbin free. Dobbin registered from play shortly after following a nice pass from Stephen Smyth.

The Lámhs hit back through a converted Adam Murray free after Conall McGuigan was fouled, but it was the briefest of rest bite as Cloughmills restored their two-point lead and then stretched it in the aftermath.

Dobbin took his tally to five by the midway point in the first half, converting two further frees and then adding his second from play.

A foul on Smyth led to Cloughmills talisman making it four from the placed ball and giving his side a 0-06-0-01 lead.

Donal Martin temporarily cut the deficit with a fine point after Micky McGuigan showed his eagerness to get to the loose flick first.

Cloughmills lead extended into double figures with six-unanswered points. All six were spread around with Kevin O’Boyle reaching a loose clearance and firing over after Conor McConville did well to deny a certain goal.

Michael Devlin then swung over from Reece Watt’s pass and Watt then produced a fine score from range.

Devlin doubled his tally before points from Liam Kearns, Stephen Smyth and a second Kevin O’Boyle point in-between a 65’ from Adam Murray, ensured that the visitors held a 0-13-0-03 lead at the break.

Lámh Dhearg did start the second period brightly and opened up with back-to-back points. Donal Martin doubled his account for the afternoon after linking up well with Adam Murray.

Sean-Paul Gibson then fizzed a shot over the bar at the near post.

That was to finish their scoring for the afternoon though as Cloughmills cantered to victory thereafter.

Eoin Dobbin got his side up and running for the half with a converted free, his fifth of the contest and seventh point overall.

With a quarter of an hour remaining Lámh Dhearg were reduced to 14-men when Conall McGuigan was shown a second yellow-card.

After a ten-minute scoreless period, Michael Devlin hit successive points for his side, the first an excellent effort range and the second a simple pop over the bar.

Devlin would provide another fine point from range in-between a double from Reece Watt and a converted free from Dobbin ensured their side hit the 20-point mark.

Odhran McCurdy got in on the act with a point before the visitors hit the net twice within sixty seconds. Both coming through substitute Corey Blair.

Blair was in the right place for the first after a shot came back off the large post and Liam Kearns popped a pass back inside for the substitute to flick home.

A second followed after Conor McConville denied Eoin Dobbin a goal with a fine save, only for Blair to appear and stab the loose ball home and give his side a 2-21-0-05 lead.

Reece Watt and added a point from play before Dobbin claimed his sides last two points from the placed ball.

Dobbin had a second opportunity of a goal when his side were awarded a penalty- though his stinging effort hit the bar and went over and before the afternoon was out, he notched his seventh free of the contest to ensure a routine Easter Sunday win.

Encouraging signs despite defeat for All Saints

ACHL Division 3

All Saints 1-11 Cuchullain’s Armagh 2-18

After a good start to life in division3 and an away win at Gort na Mona, All Saints have found it difficult to get further points on the table and their cause on Saturday wasn’t helped by the absence of top scorer, Ciaran Neeson and his brother Colm.

Never the less the home side played some good hurling against an Armagh Cuchullains who brought a wealth of experience with them and sit top of the division with three wins from three starts and are likely to be challengers for the title at season’s end.

New manager Chris Dornan has his side playing well and will be pleased to have Joseph O’Rawe, one of the most promising minor’s from a year ago, back on board.

O’Rawe marked his debut with two points while Eoin McGuigan scored his third goal in two games and despite defeat there were encouraging signs that things are going in the right direction for the Ballymena side.

Second defeat in a week but encouraging signs for All Saints

ACHL Division 3

St. Brigid’s Cloughmills 3-16 All Saints 3-10

All Saints suffered their second defeat in three games as they try to find their feet in division 3 of the ACHL after gaining promotion last year but there are signs that they are heading in the right direction.

They travelled to Cloughmills on Sunday to face a Naomh Brid side who were playing their hurling in division 2 a couple of years ago and should be strong contenders for division 3 honours this year and turned in a battling performance before going down by six points.

Ben McQuillan scored two goals for the home side and Eoin Dobbin sent over some excellent frees and had a few from play, Stephen Smyth was in fine scoring form for the ‘biddies’ and Reece Watt celebrated his introduction as a substitute with a goal.

In mid-week All Saints lost by four to a good Glenravel side in Ballymena and Chris Dornan’s side have certainly been competitive and I’m sure the former St. Gall’s manager will be looking at division 3 survival as the first goal for his side this year.

Cloughmills led 1-6 to 0-4 at half time but All Saints came out strongly in the second half and matched their opponents for long periods.

Eoin McGuigan led the way for All Saints with the corner-forward hitting 2-1 over the hour with their other goal coming for mister consistency, Damien Gillan while Ciaran Neeson weighed in with 0-7 (5 frees) in what was an encouraging performance.

McKeever powers Rasharkin to victory

ACHL Division 3

Gort na Mona 0-10 Rasharkin 3-13

Following defeat at Armoy last weekend, Rasharkin travelled to Enright Park on Sunday to face a Gort na Mona side who lost their opening game to All Saints and who are still missing a number regulars from last year.

St Mary’s seldom looked like letting this one slip and with Connor McKeever in sparkling for at full-forward they took the game to the Enright Park side and had most of the damage done by the halfway stage.

McKeever would finish with 2-6 to his credit (2 frees) and the big number 14 proved unmarkable as he led the Gort’s defence a merry dance while Connor McFerran was another in fine form for the men from Dreen.

This win should set St. Mary’s up for the rest of the season as they battle on two fronts in both football and hurling and with a win in the football league division 3 already under their belts they look set to be returning to division 2 come the end of the season.
