Blazing start and strong finish powers St. Louis to victory

Danske Bank Gallagher Cup quarter-final

St Louis’, Ballymena 4-16 Gaelcholáiste Dhoire 1-14

A blazing start and a strong finish saw St. Louis, Ballymena advance to the semi-final of the Danske Bank Gallagher Cup when they overcame the challenge of an excellent Gaelcholaiste Dhoire in Ballymena on Thursday afternoon.

The Kintullagh side looked on their way to a comfortable victory when they raced into an early two goal lead on their own 4G pitch with Joe Casey powering through for both goal in the early exchanges.

Casey added a point to his two majors and at this stage there was only one team at the races but slowly the Dungiven College began to gain a foothold.

Gaelcholáiste dominated the middle part of the half and hit back with four points between the 38th and 46th minutes, while Ballymena goalie Harry McKay was called on to make two superb saves.

The Dungiven lads got their game together after playing second fiddle for the opening 10 minutes and closed the gap to 2-6 to 0-9 by half-time, with four of those points coming from Harry Ó Cearnaigh.

The Gaelcholaiste comeback gained further momentum with Brógan Ó Dughail-Ó Cinnéide closing the gap further with the opening score of the second half but this score appeared to waken St. Louis from their slumber.

The Ballymena side moved six clear with four unanswered points through Casey, free-taker Cody McGarry (two) and Blaney to give them some breathing space.

The visitors kept plugging away with Harry O’Cearnaigh prominent with his free taking and looked at one stage like over hauling the St. Louis lead but a double strike from half-back Harry Blaney in the 51st minute lifted the Ballymena side and they pushed on to win by 11 points in the end.

St Louis’ now face St Mary’s, Belfast in the semi-final, while the first semi-final involving St Patrick’s, Maghera and Cross & Passion, Ballycastle is pencilled in for Portglenone on Monday.

St Louis’ J Casey 2-2; H Blaney 2-1; C McGarry 0-9 (0-6f); EL Bradley 0-3 (0-2f)

Gaelcholáiste H Ó Cearnaigh 1-7 (1-6f); B Ó Dughail-Ó Cinnéide 0-3; O Ó Gilláin 0-2; O Ó Cléirigh (f) and MJ Mac Oscair 0-1 each

Gaelfast Year 8 Football Cup

Our Lady & St. Patrick’s Knock, St. Malachy’s Belfast, St. Joseph’s Belfast and St. Louis Ballymena contest a very enjoyable Gaelfast Year 8 Football Cup at the Ballymena College’s excellent all weather facility on Wednesday.

The action got off to a great start with Our Lady & St. Patrick’s taking on St. Malachy’s in the first quarter-final with St. Malachy’s coming back strongly in the second half but the Antrim Road side were edged out by a couple of points.

The standard of football from both sides was right out of the top drawer and the game could have gone either way.

In the second semi-final hosts St. Louis had too much fire power and strength for a battling St. Joseph’s who fought hard all the way but had no answer to a high scoring Kintullagh outfit.

And so it was on to the final where again St. Louis looked the team to beat and despite a big effort from Our Lady & St. Patrick’s it was the Ballymena College who claimed the spoils to go forward to next week’s final against St. Mary’s CBGS at Dunsilly.

Early second half goals swing it St. Paul’s way

Ulster Ladies Post Primary Schools

· U20 B Shield Final

St. Dominic’s 2-10 St. Paul’s Bessbrook 4-9

Two goals early in the second half swung this U20B Ulster College’s final decisively in the direction of St. Paul’s Bessbrook as they went on to defeat St. Dominic’s Belfast in and excellent final at Colaiste Feirste.

The Belfast girls looked on their way to victory when they led the Armagh side 2-6 to 0-6 at the halfway stage and they were good value for that lead with Erin Stewart excellent on the edge of the square contributing 1-3 and their other goal coming from Aoife Fitzsimmons.

Eva Louise Breslin carried the greatest first half threat for the Bessbrook side, converting three first half frees and another from play but the ball appeared to be in St. Dominic’s court as the teams changed ends on the Falls Road.

Goals from Breslin and Annabelle McKevitt in the opening five minutes of the second half swung the balance of play in favour of the Armagh side though St. Dominic’s remained in touch at the end of the third quarter.

Grace O’Callaghan’s goal moved St. Paul’s three in front but points from Erin Stewart and Niamh McAllister for the city side left just one in it with seven minutes remaining and it still looked anyone’s game.

Annebelle McKevitt pointed and a fourth goal from Olivia Cromie for St. Paul’s with two minutes remaining put it out of reach of the Belfast girls and ensure the U20B Shield was on its way to County Armagh.

A great game of football that was in the balance until late in the game with Annie Stanfield, Grace O’Callaghan, Olivia Cromie and Eva Louise Breslin in great form for the winners and Anna Rice, Aoife Fitzsimmons, Erin Stewart and Niamh McAllister best for St. Dominic’s

St. Dominic’s Belfast: 1 Amy Murray, 2 Cara Lynch, 3 Grace Holbrook, 4 Sophia Brown, 5 Tara Culbert, 6 Maeve Devlin, 7 Lucy Reynolds, 8 Anna Rice, 9 Ciara Murray, 10 Aoife Fitzsimmons, 11 Hannah McAllister, 12 Amelie Annette, 13 Aoife Garland, 14 Erin Stewart, 15 Niamh McAllister.

Late rally not enough as St. Louis bow out

McLarnon Cup Knockout

St. Louis Ballymena 3-8 St. Malachy’s Castlewellan 3-11

A late rally from St. Louis Ballymena fell short as the Kintullagh side bowed out to St. Malachy’s castlewellan in the knock-out stages of the McLarnon Cup at Colaisre Feirste on Wednesday afternoon.

The Down side were well on top during the opening half with the superb Ruairi Madine pulling the strings and looked well on their way to the next round when they led by 3-9 to 1-2 at the halfway stage.

Madine was the Ballymena side’s tormentor in chief during this periods but St. Louis will surely reflect on his two late first half goals which were both preventable as the reason why they were left with too much to do in a much improved second half.

It took the Kintullagh side 17 minutes to register their first point from an Odhran Duffin free but by this stage the Down side had registered 1-3 through Martin Og Brannigan, Ruairi Madine and Manus Middleton with their goal coming from Rian Walsh.

Castlewellan kept building up a healthy lead with points from Middleton (0-3), Shea Barker, Caolan Flannagan and Luke Rooney before Caleb Smith gave St. Louis a lift when he finished a well worked move to the net in the 20th minute.

Patrick O’Neill added a point but those two late goals from man of the match, Madine left the South West Antrim club with a mountain to climb in the second half.

Whatever was said at the break, St. Louis returned to the field a much more determined and focused side in the second half and Ryan McKeever, Odhran Duffin (f) and Caleb Smith 0-2 split the posts in the opening 13 minutes.

Manus Middleton and Ryan McCourt replied with points for the Castlewellan College but St. Louis were now enjoying much more of the play and Damian Kinsella gave them a major boost when he finished to the net with 7 minutes remaining.

Fullback Sean McDermott followed with a great long range point before Odhran Duffin finished a fine move to the net with time almost up.

St. Louis pushed hard during the final minutes but a Cillian Scullion point was as close as they would get with St. Malachy’s relieved to hear the final whistle.

St. Louis: 1 Charlie Cunning, 2 Shea griffin, 3 Sean McDermott, 4 Oisin Hamill, 5 Patrick O’Neill, 6 Jack Martin, 7 Ryan McKeever, 8 Sean Og Blaney, 9 Luke McFerran, 10 Odhran Duffin, 11 Sean O’Brien, 12 Fiontan Bradley, 13 Cillian Scullion, 14 Caolan McFerran, 15 Caleb

St. Malachy’s: 1 Callum Travers, 2 Harry Keenan, 3 Luke Brannigan, 5 Shea Barker, 6 Ross Green, 7 Martin Og Brannigan, 8 Daelach McGreevey, 9 Odhran McCann, 10 Ryan McCourt, 11 Luke Rooney, 12 Manus Middleton, 13 Rian Walsh, 14 Ruairi Madine, 15 Caolan Flanagan, 16 Matthew Murran
