Walsh strikes late to give Antrim a share of the spoils

Antrim 2-18 Carlow 1-21

Sunday 2 March

Brendan McTaggart reports from Netwatch Cullen Park, Carlow

James McNaughton makes a high catch during Sunday’s NHL Division 1B game with Carlow in Netwatch Cullen Park

It was the late, late show for Antrim on Sunday afternoon but Gerard Walsh’s 75th minute wonder strike ensured the Saffrons fate in Division 1B remains in their own hands.

Standing over the sliotar and a wall of colour in front of him, 35 yards from goal, it was all or nothing for Antrim and Walsh, somehow, managed to find the back of the Carlow net.

Was it a deserved ending?  Absolutely.  Antrim showed the fight and desire Davy Fitzgerald had called for after recent defeats and but for seven or eight minutes at the end of the first half, they performed more like the Antrim team we have come accustomed to in recent times.

Goal chances came and left before finally finding a way through.  On another day, Conor Johnston would be walking off with three goals beside his name.  As it was, he hit the bottom of the upright, was felled in the build up to Keelan Molloy’s goal and had a fresh air strike with the goal at his mercy.  James McNaughton finished with eight points, six from placed ball and uncharacteristically missed a couple of frees along with a penalty.  That being said, McNaughton’s overall contribution was outstanding.  His ability to evade challenges and create chances was second to none in an Antrim shirt.

When Fitzgerald and his team analyse this one, they’ll realise that it’s a chance missed.  But looking at the positives, and there are plenty to come from this 70 plus minutes, have they come across a winning formula?  Plenty has been said in relation to systems and styles being implanted so far.  I’ve been one of those who have questioned it.  In that second 35 minutes on Sunday afternoon, Antrim really turned the screw.  Trailing by seven points six minutes into the second half, they reduced the home side to four points from play and seven overall while hitting 2-8 themselves despite missing a plethora of further chances.

What was the difference?  There were different personnel but positionally, Antrim were much more tuned in to what was being asked of them.  They put pressure on the Carlow puck outs and upped the intensity in the middle third.  Winning clean ball with Conall Bohill excelling, Ryan McCambridge superb in second phase ball while Gerard Walsh was in his element in the advanced position.

From our own restarts, there was an initial reluctance to go long.  Short puck outs were then being driven from the full back and latterly the half back lines in an attempt to bypass the middle third but the variation kept Carlow from getting to grips with Ryan Elliott’s puck outs.

The only really worrying aspect of this game was the closing period of the first half.  The sides were tied on seven points each in the 27th minute when Carlow got the opening goal of the game.  It was Chris Nolan who was on the end of the move that involved Marty Kavanagh in the buildup and despite a less than favourable angle, he managed to beat Elliott with a drilled effort.

A further four points followed with James Doyle at his brilliant best with Antrim’s solitary response coming from a Keelan Molloy point with the last action of the half.

Antrim’s Joe Maskey in action against Carlow at Cullen Park

It was a harsh ending to the half for Antrim and a further reminder that if you take your eye off the ball at this level, you’ll get punished.  In a first half where they showed plenty of determination and defensively for long periods, had the match of a talented Carlow attack but they were struggling for any kind of momentum in attack.  Whether that be the delivery of ball or touches being missed, it just wasn’t clicking in that first half for the Saffrons.  Four points in the opening eight minutes was followed by the same tally in the time that remained in the first half.  That being said, the work rate and determination was there.  They needed to convert the chances they were creating to start making the home side think differently.

A quick fire brace from Conor Johnston soon after the restart got Antrim off to a bright start and while Carlow were taking scores and keeping the score board ticking, the Saffrons were looking much more threatening in attack.  The introduction of Cormac McKeown certainly having an impact.

A run of five points in seven minutes with just one white flag coming the way of Carlow helped to reduce the deficit to three points and 25 minutes of the match remaining.  It could have been better for the Saffrons but Conor Johnston’s brilliant effort somehow found the bottom of the right hand upright with Brian Tracey beaten between the sticks.

Second half substitute Cormac McKeown runs at the Carlow defence

McKeown reduced that deficit to two shortly after before Kavanagh converted his second free of the half in the 59th minute.

With all the momentum, Antrim’s slick passing created a massive goal scoring opportunity for McNaughton.  He was felled by Paul Doyle who was black carded for his troubles and McNaughton stood 20 yards from goal to take the penalty.  He struck the sliotar well but Brian Tracey was equal to his strike and his rebounded effort went to the wrong side of the post.

With six minutes remaining, midfielder Ciaran Whelan put four between the sides and it felt like it was an insurance point for the home side.  Antrim came once again and another slick move, they carved open the Carlow defence and Johnston was on the end of a half chance.  He went to strike unorthodoxly but was swarmed out by a retreating Carlow defence only for Molloy to fire the rebound to the back of the net.

Antrim were well on top with any Carlow attacks fleeting in the closing stages.  They did manage to open a three point lead once again in the second minute of injury time but commeth the hour, commeth the man.  Antrim had one last chance, if you could even call it that when Gerard Walsh stood over a free 35 yards from goal.  Walsh drilled low and the sliotar evaded everyone to nestle in the bottom corner of the net with what was the last action of the game.

A fantastic end to what was a gripping second half of hurling.  Antrim look ahead now to the visit of Laois in seven days time in a winner takes all contest.  If ever there was a time to produce the goods, this was it.  The Saffrons go into that game on the back of what was their best performance of the year and while it may have been points shared at Cullen Park, this felt like a shift in mentality and momentum by the final whistle.

Onto the next one.

Antrim had too much power for Down in Ulster Minor final

Danny McNaughton Cup final (Ulster Minor Hurling)

Antrim 4-27 Down 2-6

Ulster President Michael Geoghan presents the Danny McNaughton Memorial Cup to joint Antrim captains Conor McCann (left) and Cadhan Crawford after their teams win over Down.

Antrim scored a runaway win over Down in Sunday’s Ulster Minor Hurling final at Pairc MacUilin, Ballycastle. The home side played with a strong wind at their backs in the opening half and basically had the game won at half time when they went in leading by 1-15 to to 0-01. Down made a great start to the second half when Dara Puci got a goal within a couple of minutes of the restart and you wondered if they could make a game of it, but the wind advantage that would have been part of their thinking at half time was all but gone by this stage and Antrim were soon back in control and dominated the remainder of the game to claim the Danny McNaughton Cup

The Saffrons were on the mark from the start of the game and though Down tried to make it difficult for them with their strong pressing in the early stages the Saffrons started to find the target. With left half forward James McDonnell in great form the scores started to come, the St Paul’s man at the heart of everything they did.

The first goal came on ten minutes when full forward Nicholas McLaughlin regained possession after his initial effort had been blocked, and made no mistake this time as he fired home from close range. With McDonnell send over from both frees and from play the gap widened as they pushed on to lead by 1-15 to 0-1 at the break, the Down point coming from a Dara Puci free.

Antrim made a few changes at the start of the second half with Cadhan Crawford and Eunan Johnston, who had been part of the Cross & Passion team who won the Paddy Buggy Cup semi-final in Dublin the previous day, coming on to join Darragh Kinney who had played from the star. When Puci fired home his goal within seconds of the restart you wondered if the Ards side could after all make a game of it, but Antrim’s cushion was so big they never really felt any pressure and they soon regained the upper hand. The scores were not coming quite as regular as they had done in the first half, but they were always holding the upper hand

Antrim’s James McDonnell who gave a man of the match display in the win over Down

Down hit a good patch between the 41st and 45th minutes with a goal and three points. Sub Tommy Joe Cosgrove started the run. Then Oran McAnarney and Tom Hickson added points before the goal that came from a speculative shot from defender Ryan Tolan.

However Antrim simply moved up a gear with Crawford pointing two frees and then going around the left side of the Down defence and racing in to give Shea Dorrian no chance for what was his 7th goal of the Ulster campaign.

Antrim added three more points with just a Dara Pucci free from a difficult angle in reply. Jay McAlonan hammered the final nails into Down’s coffin taking a hand in the late two goals and a point. The Dunloy forward hit 1-1 and set up substitute Caolán Wilson for his goal in between his own scores.

Both teams now try their luck in different tiers of the Leinster championship with the Saffrons standing a decent chance of making an impression in the top grade.

Down: D Pucci 1-3, 0-3 frees, R Tolan 1-0, T Hickson, O McAnarney and TJ Cosgrove 0-1 each.

Antrim: JC Crawford (0-4 frees) and J McAlonan 1-5 each, N McLaughlin and C Wilson 1-0 each, J McDonnell 0-7, 2 frees, D McNaughton and A Cochrane 0-3 each, R Taylor, C McIntosh, C Leech and S Smyth 0-1 each

Down: Shea Dorrian, Ryan Tolan, Marc Mageean, Ryan Clarke, Ben Neal, Patrick Sharvin, Brendan Barry, Fionn Dougan, Cónall Vaugh, Dara Pucci, Artie óg Birt, Tom Hickson, Eoin Murray, Oran McAnarney, Conor Comiskey

Subs used: Rónán Breen, Tommy Joe Cosgrove, Eoghan Rooney, Joel Rogers, Ruairí óg Ó Scanaill.

Antrim: Liam Magee, Aaron Quinn, Liam Smyth, Oisín Heaney, Darragh Kinney, Conor McCann, Dáire Jemfrey, Anthony Cochrane, Canice McIntosh, Dylan McNaughton, Christy Leech, James McDonnell, Jay McAlonan, Nicholas McLaughlin, Rónan Taylor.

Early second half goals swing it decisively Tir na nOg’s way

O’Cahan Cup

St. Mary’s Ahoghill 0-12 Tir na nOg 2-15

An excellent goal from Ciaran O’Neill, eight minutes into the second half swung this O’Cahan Cup first round encounter decisively in favour of Tir na nOg and when Sean Paul McAtamney struck a second from the penalty spot, a minute later it was as good as over.

A depleted St. Mary’ gave as good as they got during an interesting opening half and despite having only 15 players on duty were good value for the 0-6 to 0-6 half time scoreline.

O’Neill’s goal following a well-constructed build up changed all that and McAtamney’s successful penalty conversion suddenly put 8 points between the sides and while the Ahoghill side never gave up, there would be no way back.

Caleb Smith got Tir na nOg off the mark with a 2nd minute point and the youngster add a second from a 6th minute free before Patrick Graham replied for the home side with a point in the 10th minute. It was the visitors who looked the livelier however as Ciaran Logan and Joshua Higgins extended their lead.

James O’Connell, who was instrumental in nearly everything Ahoghill produced came back with a good point from outside the ‘40’ and as play swung end to end Oliver McAtamney responded with an equally impressive effort at the other end.

Aaron McNeilly looked to have put the Whitehill side in a strong position with a point in the 30th minute but the Clooney side finished the half strongly to draw level through Ronan Graham and James O’Connell.

Those early second half goals changed the momentum of the game completely with Aaron McNeilly’s inch perfect, 40 meter cross field pass finding Ciaran O’Neill and he took a few steps before drilling his shot low to Aiden Graham’s left.

The goal followed points from McNeilly and O’Neill and when Sean Paul McAtamney converted a penalty in the 9th minute it was as good as over.

Three more points from Oliver McAtamney and another from Aaron McNeilly had the Og’s 2-13 to 0-7 ahead after 19 minutes before St. Mary’s staged a short period of success as James O’Connell converted three free, one a two pointer with McNeilly replying at the other end before Daniel Hastings and Sean Grant entered the action for the Randalstown side.

Conor Crossey, who had been busy throughout for the Ahoghill side, brought their tally to 0-12 with a good point with Ciaran O’Neill concluding the scoring at the other end as Tir na nOg advance to the next round.

Ahoghill: Aiden Graham, 2 Shea Neeson, 3 Bobby Magee, 4 Seamus McKeever, 5 Patrick Dougan, 6 Diarmaid Graham, 7 Ronan Graham, 8 Noel Crossey, 9 Patrick Graham, 10 Colla McDonnell, 11 James O’Connell, 12 Ryan mcPeake, 13 Ben Friel, 14 Conor Crossey, 15 Ryan Martin.

Tir na nOg: 1 Sean Paul McAtamney, 2 Sean McKeown, 3 Ciaran McGrellis, 4 Declan Marron, 6 Barry McCormick, 7 Ciaran Logan, 8 Joshua Higgins, 9 Oliver McAtamney, 10 Aaron McNeilly, 11 Ryan O’Neill, 12 Ciaran O’Neill, 13 Alex O’Donnell, 14 Dylan McLarnon, 15 Caleb Smith.

Stylish showing sees CPC book Paddy Buggy final place

Masita Paddy Buggy All-Ireland hurling semi-final

Cross & Passion Ballycastle 2-23 Clonmel CBS High School 1-17

Cross & Passion College bridged a ten year gap when they booked their place in the Masita Paddy Buggy fCup inal at UCD, Dublin on Saturday, at the expense of Munster champions Clonmel High School. The Ballycastle college turned on the style with a series of outrageous scores throughout the game to set up a final meeting with Oranmore of Galway on March 15th…. probably at Abbotstown.

CPC were in control of the game for most of the hour, apart from a brief spell midway through the first half when Clonmel twice got their noses in front and at this stage of the game it looked like the Tipperary boys were getting on top. However the second quarter belonged to the Antrim men who produced a stunning second quarter which brought them from a point down to seven up by the time the referee bblew the half time whistle.

Oisin McCallin started the comeback with two points inside a minute, the first from out on the left wing, and the second from wide on the right. The excellent Aaron Cagney and Mickey McGuire came back with two for the ‘High School’ at the other end to just edge their team back in front, but a superbly taken goal from CPC full forward Roan McGarry from a seemingly impossible angle got the Ulster champions back in front and they finished the half with a series of spectacular point, three of them inside a minute, to finish the half with a 1-13 to 0-09 lead.

CPC started the second half as they finished the first and four points without reply, two of them from Roan McGarry and one each from Cadhan Crawford and ‘Rosie’Fitgerald had the gap out to eleven.

Clonmel hit back with four of their own, two of them from McGuire frees and one each from Conal Morrison and Finn Napier to bring the gap back to seven, just as it had been at half-time. The four score sequence continued with another gem of a score from McCallin, one from Paudie Martin and two from the bustling centre forward Conor Donnelly who burst through to split the post twice in as many minutes.

There was a warning sign that the Clonmel boys were far from finished when goalkeeper Anthony Mullan was forced to make a brilliant close range save and when David McSweeney and Aaron Cagney came back with points you felt the Munster champions were still very much in the game. When midfielder Morrison got through for a well taken goal soon afterwards the gap was down to five and for spell the CPC supporters were on edge. It took some heroics from Liam Glackin and co at the back to prevent the gap from closing further, but when Paudie Martin popped over another point the winners hit their stride once again.

Roan McGarry with two more and substitute Conan Johnston all but sealed the win before Oisin McCamphill put the icing on the cake with and outrageous piece of skill which saw him flick the ball from an attempted clearance by the Clonmel goalkeeper, controlling it on his hurl before firing to the net…a score for the ages!

All eyes turn towards the March 15th final against Oranmore of Galway, but in the meantime the majority of the team have a lot of hurling still to do, with nine of them on the Antrim Under 20 squad to face Down in the Ulster decider and three in action at 12 noon today in the Danny McNaughton Memorial Cup final against the same opposition.

CPC: Anthony Mullan, Reece Cunning, Cian Baudant, Eunan Johnston, Darragh Donnelly, Liam Glackin (c), Arden Kelly, Darragh Kinney, Ronan FItzgerald, Niall McClean, Conor Donnelly, Paudie Martin, Oisin McCallin, Roan McGarry, Cadhan Craword.

Subs – Conan Johnston

Scorers – R McGarry 1-8, 0-2 frees, O McCallin 1-5, P Martin 0-4, 2 frees, C Donnelly 0-3, C Crawford 0-2, R Fitzgerald 0-1

Clonmel: H Lawlor 1-2, Aaron Cagney 0-12, 10 frees, Connal Morrison 1-0, B Roche 0-2, 1 free, M Bates 0-1
