FonaCAB Ulster Minor Football Tournament, Preliminary Round
Mayobridge 2-10-1-10 Kingscourt Stars
Kevin Herron reports from An Sportlann, Colaiste Feirste
MAYOBRIDGE advanced to the quarter-final of the FonaCAB Ulster Minor Football Tournament at St Pauls with a 2-10-1-10 victory over Kingscourt Stars of Cavan in their prelim clash at An Sportlann Colasite Feirste on Sunday afternoon.
Playing with the strong breeze in the opening half, Mayobridge capitalised in the early stages with Corey Clerkin swinging a high shot over the bar inside of 23-seconds before the opening goal arrived in the 3rd minute.
Daniel Carr surged forward with ease and after bearing down on goal he shot low past Cian Platt in the Kingscourt goal.
It took ten minutes for the Cavan outfit to register through Aaron Shekleton but at the other end Cian Platt needed to block Daire O’Keeffe’s goalbound attempt and Clerkin converted a free after play was brought back for a foul in the build-up.
Midway through the half Mayobridge cut through and threatened the Kingscourt goal again. Clerkin was slipped in by Darragh Poland, the goal chance was closed, and Daniel Carr shot over on the turn.
Clerkin doubled his tally from play following a link-up with Patrick Woods and Woods then joined the scoring list, converting a free after being fouled.
Kingscourt were in need of a score to give themselves hope at the break and a stroke of fortune saw them find the net on the 24th minute.
Joe McCormack got his hand to a loose pass and ran onto the ball ahead of Michael Gallagher and stroked a low shot into the corner of the net to make it 1-05-1-01.
An angled Darragh Poland point in reply left five-points between the sides at the break with McCormack’s goal ensuring his side were still in touch with the breeze in the second period.
Mayobridge started the brighter after the break and extended their advantage through a Clerkin point.
After a series of wides in the opening half, Kingscourt full-forward Michael McKeon found his range, but Patrick Woods converted his second free of the afternoon a few minutes later.
Woods almost found his sides second goal after collecting a pass from Clerkin, though his shot from a tight angle was deflected away from danger
The Down Champions only had two minutes to wait before they did take a huge stride to victory on the 43rd minute with Daire O’Keeffe ramming home from close-range to open up a 2-08-1-02 lead.
Kingscourt weren’t going quietly however and five-points unanswered breathed new life into proceedings.
Captain, Cormac McAvinney led the fightback with their first score in almost a quarter of an hour and popped over again four minutes later to reduce arrears to four (2-08-1-07).
In-between times Michael McKeon converted two frees and steered over his second from play.
Despite trailing, momentum was with the Cavan outfit until substitute Darragh Sherlock was dismissed with seven minutes to play.
The corner-back was booked along with Mayobridge’s Ryan Coulter for an off the ball incident early in the second half and Sherlock was given his marching orders- picking up a black card for a deliberate pull-down.
Patrick Woods converted the resulting free and Corey Clerkin kicked his fifth and final point of the afternoon 60-seconds later to move Mayobridge 2-10-1-07 ahead.
Kingscourt would rally again in the closing stages and Michael McKeon kicked three further frees in a four-minute period to setup a grandstand finish.
A second goal eluded his side though as Mayobridge saw the game out to advance to a quarter-final meeting with Fr Rocks Cookstown on December 15th.

The character and resolve that has epitomised Carey Faughs all season was again produced in bagful’s as the men from Ballyvoy were forced to dig deep before overcoming the challenge of excellent Monaghan champions Castleblaney in Carrickmore on Sunday.
Storm Bert forced the delay of this semi-final by 24 hours and while Pairc Colmcille was in excellent condition considering the previous 36 hours of rain, snow and wind, the game turned into a real arm wrestle with little opportunity for open hurling.
Conor McBride whose brilliant injury time goal sealed the win for Carey
The Monaghan champions brought a high intensity to the contest and the game was interrupted by intermitting rucking throughout with the Castleblaney Faughs making the early running.
Thomas Hughes hit a couple of early wides for the Monaghan champions and Shea Hunter was off target for the Antrim side before Fergal Rafter finally got the game’s opening point to move Castleblaney ahead in the 6th minute.
With a strong diagonal wind slightly favouring Castleblaney and underfoot conditions softening, open hurling was proving difficult and it was 14 minutes before Conor McBride took a pass from Michael McVeigh before levelling the scores.
Caolan McCaughan edged the Antrim champions ahead for the first time, a minute later but Castleblaney were fiercely contesting every ball and they would draw level through Brian McGuigan before Mark Trainor restored their lead with 19 minutes gone.
A fine piece of fielding and a shot on the turn by Callum Kane had the side’s level for the third time with 8 minutes remaining to the break but just when it looked like Cathaoir an Ri were finding their feet the Monaghan side found a response.
The excellent Fergal Rafter pushed them into a two point lead from frees in the 26th and 29th minute and the same player struck a superb point from play to stretch the lead to three before Conleth McKinnley replied with a much needed score for the Ballyvoy men to leave them trailing by two at the break.
With the wind now in their favour for the second half Carey Faughs would have been expected to take control but it was the impressive Declan Hughes who moved ‘Blaney’ three in front after 28 seconds of the restart.
Carey tried to respond and a James Black sideline cut was diverted for a ‘65’ which Conal McGlynn converted in the 37th minute, and the same player followed from a 40 meter free to leave just one in it with 8 minutes gone.
Mark Trainor for the Monaghan Faughs and McGlynn for the Antrim version exchanged further points and Fergal Rafter edged the Monaghan men two in front again before James Black closed the gap to one with a point from close range.
Less that a week after burying his father James Rocket Black gave a Man of the match display to help guide Carey to the Ulster final
Man of the match Black looked to be in for a goal but took the safer option and it was probably the right decision as Conleth McKinnley levelled the contest from a difficult angle in the 18th minute and Carey were starting to get on top.
A superb long range point from mid-fielder Callum Kane brought the travelling Ballyvoy supporters to their feet but Castleblaney were still hanging in there and free taker Rafter levelled once more with seven minutes remaining.
It would be the final time the sides were level and as play began to open up James McCaouig produced a strong run from deep in defence but looked to have lost possession.
However the ball broke out to substitute Fiachra McVeigh who sent Conor McBride clear on the right, his instant pick-up on the run creating time and space and he made no mistake as he fired to the net from 25 meters for the only goal of the game.
McBride’s goal moved the Antrim champions four ahead as the clock ticked towards full time but Castleblaney rallied with a point from Thomas Hughes. A brilliant head first dive by full-back Sean McBride kept the Monaghan men at bay during a hectic period of injury time to deny Trainor as the Monaghan side went looking for the goal that would have sent it to extra time.
A great win in the end for Carey Faughs who will now meet Swatragh of Derry in next weekend’s final and it looks likely that that game might be played in Loughgiel, the venue of the Ballyvoy men’s Antrim final success.

fonaCAB Ulster Minor Club Football Tournament quarter-final O’Donovan Rossa, Magherafelt 1-16 St Brigid’s 2-10
A late goal by centre back Eoin Sherry brought Antrim champions St Brigid’s to within one score of Derry’s Magherafelt O’Donovan Rossa in Saturday evening’s opening game in the fonaCAB Ulster Minor Football tournament at Colaiste Féirste’s. The Musgrave Park side had battled hard against a hotly fancied Magherafelt outfit who always held the upper hand.
The Derry boys led by five at the break and increased that lead to eight at a stage in the second half. It began to look like this would be a real runaway for the Derry side, but to their credit St Brigid’s kept on battling and closed to within three by the time Down referee Gavin Finnegan sounded the final whistle.
Rossa held the upper hand from the start and with their pace causing St Brigid’s problems at the back and Cathir Spiers opened their account with a point inside four minutes. Things got worse for St Brigid’s when the Derry champions grabbed the opening goal of the game through Kian Maynes, but St Brigid’s hit back right away top scorer JJ Higgins swung a ball across the Rossa goalmouth for Joseph Mellon to palm to the net.
Things were suddenly looking promising for the Antrim champions, but Magherafelt came back strongly with points from Spiers and Kerr to push the lead back out to three. McGarvey fisted over for St Brigid’s to close the gap to two but Caolan and Conall Higgins responded with points for Rossa and late scores from Jude Beattie, Conall Higgins and Lorcan Higgins stretched their advantage to five at the interval. Magherafelt 1-8 St Brigid’s 1-03
That five point lead was soon out to seven as Leacock and Higgins added points soon after the restart and the gap was out to eight after goalkeeper Karl Campbell sent over from a 45.
St Brigid’s full forward JJ Higgins, who ended with eight points to his name, helped his side close to within six. The gap stayed at six as both sides exchanged points in a hard fought contest.
With the gap at six St Brigid’s needed something special to get back into contention and when Sherry got in for his team’s second goal there was renewed hope among the South Belfast fans. It was not to be however as the Derry champions were able to keep the St Brigid’s challenge at arms-length as they secured their place in the semi-final in two weeks’ time.

The Carey Faughs v Castleblaney Ulster Intermediate Hurling quarter final which was fixed for today (Saturday) in Carricmore has been put back until tomorrow because of the weather.
With Storm Bert sweeping across the country conditions were too bad to play the game, so it was decided to put it back a day with the venue and starting time the same as the original
