All County Hurling League Div 3 & 4
Shane O’Neill’s Glenarm 2-19 Cushendun Emmets 1-12
Shane O’Neill’s recent good form continued at Feystown today when they beat North Antrim rivals Cushendun by 2-19 to 1-12. However the main taking point from an Emmet’s point of views was the fact that team manager Ferus ‘Skinner’ McAlister lined out in the green and black to makes sure his team could fulfil the fixture. The former and Cushendall and Antrim star, who played for the county against Kilkenny in the 1987 All Ireland final in Dundalk started the game in goals after the Emmets struggled to get a team because of the amount of players away on holiday. Skinner was replaced at half time after a later replacement arrived, but he was far from finished and he came on during the second half after another veteran Robert Paul Laverty went off injured and he actually scored a point during that spell back on.
However all his efforts, and those of the rest of the team, were wasted as the Glenarm men ran out comfortable winners to continue their recent run of success.
Cushendun started brightly and early points from Eoin McQuillan and Conleth McNeill had them ahead but with Dylan McLoughlin starring up front Glenarm hit back with five points on the trot to take the lead. McNeill hit another free over to leave just two between the sides but boosted by a Sean O’Hare goal Glenarm took control and went on to lead by 1-12 to 0-5 at half time.
Two early Darren Hamill points at the start of the second half second half stretched the Glenarm lead, though Cushendun kept on battling and they hit five of the next seven points, three of them from Conleth McNeill. However a goal from man of the match Dylan McLoughglin five minutes from time ended any thoughts of a comeback for the visitors as the home side went on to win by ten in the end.
