St. Enda’s travelled to Whitehill today to take on Tír na nÓg in the second half of the league campaign. At times the game was scrappy however both teams played with passion which seen the lead swap a number of times throughout the hour, but it was the fist of Randalstown’s Colm Duffin in the last play of the game which seen him find the back of the net and gain a huge result and one point victory for his team.
It took five minutes for any team to register a score in this game when Ciaran Dobbin that raised the white flag first for the hosts. Odhran Eastwood then hit the next three points of the game, two from frees and one from play to put the visitors 0-3 to 0-1 clear. But after 15minutes the men in blue hit the front again when a four man move involving Colm Duffin, Kevin Kerr and Ciaran McKeown finished with Pearse Sheerin firing a shot from 20metres to the top corner of the St Enda’s net. A superb point with the outside of his right boot by Kevin put the home side 1.2 to 0.3 ahead after 16 minutes, however Donal Walsh replied with a point for the visitors to narrow the gap to the minimum.
St Enda’s Philip Curran drove through the middle of the home defence and shot for a point but Kevin Kerr was on hand to make a super block in the home defence and after he broke up the field, Ciaran Dobbin was fouled on the ball and Pearse Sheerin put the resulting free over the bar. Eastwood stepped up again on 24minutes to hit his fourth point of the game and though the Whitehill men hit a number of wides, Christy Sheerin made amends as got his first point of the game with a left footed free before Michael Morgan spilt the posts on 30mins to close the gap to one point at half time (1.04 to 0.06).
The second half began at a very high intensity when Sean Redmond made a run from half back only to be fouled in the square and win a penalty. Redmond stepped up himself to hit the shot, but Saints keeper Paddy Flood got down quickly and made himself big to save the shot. Two minutes into the second half Kevin Sheerin was introduced for Kevin Coogan and Sean Redmond raised the white flag for the blues. The game remained nip and tuck and Ciaran Thompson came forward from half back to get himself on the scoresheet and again bring the game back to one point. Sean Duffin was introduced into the game for Ciaran McKeown before the home side’s Ciaran Dobbin grabbed two good points, both of them set up by the Sheerin brothers Christy and Kevin.
Although three points down St. Enda’s didn’t lose faith and after an interception by corner back Niall Heatley he passed the ball to Eastwood who combined with Cormac Albanach for an excellent point which signalled the start of a comeback for the visitors. Immediately after Odhran Eastwood hit 2 more points to level the game. On 43minutes the visitors took the lead with a second point from Donal Walsh and two minutes later Niall McKeown put his side two clear. Both teams were using their bench to their advantage and to freshen things up Darragh Fegan was brought on for Sean Duffin on 43minutes and Albanach was reintroduced for Cillian Jennings. With 12minutes to go Eastwood sent over another point from a free but this was answered by a second left footed free by Christy Sheerin to keep his side within touching distance. The Randalstown management rang the changes as Richard Fitzgerald entered the play for Kevin Kerr and Ryan O’Neill for Pearse Sheerin but St Enda’s closed the gap when skipper Barry McCormick got the next score of the game on 58minutes to reduce the gap to one point.
However Walsh and Morgan replied with points of their own to keep the scoreboard ticking in their favour and one minute later wing half back Ciaran Logan added another to apparently seal the win. However there was still life in the men in blue and they got one more chance when Christy Sheerin floated a high ball into the St Enda’s square where full back Colm Duffin rosee higher than everyone else to fist the ball to the back of the net, to seal a win which seconds earlier had looked unlikely.
