Tipp’s loss becomes Antrim’s gain!
As the dust settled on last weekend’s epic and memorable encounter few could have expected that Tipp’s heartbreak could have a positive impact on young Belfast Gaels.
With more time than they would have wanted, current Tipperary  All Ireland winners, Niall O’Meara, Rónán Maher & Jason Forde have been enticed to bring their much lauded Total Hurling Workshop north. The trio will be joined by 2 time All Star & Tipp 2010 legend Shane Mc Grath.
Commenting on the camp O’Meara explained that the connection was established during their recent visit to Belfast back in February. On that occasion Tipperary had travelled North to play Antrim in memory of Father Alec Reid. O’Meara’s grandfather had hurled with Father Reid. Such was the impression of that weekend’s events upon them that they vowed to maintain a link with the hurling faithful of the city.
The camp is to be based at the home of the famous Belfast Hurling Nursery, St Mary’s Grammar school on the Glen Road. All age groups from U13-17 will be catered for.
The camp has been run throughout Munster and in Dublin this year and has been widely acclaimed. All four are teachers by profession and many have commented on their rapport with young hurlers, organisational skills and attention to detail. During the camp Niall O’Meara will be working on fielding under pressure & speed and agility drills. Shane Mc Grath will focus on mini games & winning the breaking ball. Jason Forde will take workshops on striking, first touch & dead ball shooting. Whilst current All Star defender Rónán Maher will concentrate on tackling drills & defensive play.
A physiologist from University of Limerick will be in attendance and work with the players on flexibility, speed, conditioning and recovery.
Each player will receive a mobility band and there will be draw for some excellent prizes. An invite has also been extended to local coaches to come along and watch the drills & sessions.
It is surely a unique opportunity for Antrim’s young hurlers to be put through their paces by 4 of the country’s top level performers. It’s not very often that multiple Fitzgibbon and All Ireland stars come North to part their knowledge in such a well organised setting.
