Portglenone 1-10 Rossa 2-5

Portglenone Geraldine’s set up an interesting semi-final with Ballycastle as a result of this hard-fought Fire Stop & Seal Antrim Senior Camogie Championship tie in Creggan this evening.

However that result didn’t look to be the likely outcome after ten minutes play, by which time the recently returned Mairiosa McGourty had registered two goals and a point and the south west girls couldn’t find the scoring range at all.

However Caitriona Hasson was moved back from midfield to cover Mairiosa and, with Cristin O’Kane tying down the defence with a strong display at full-back, Portglenone gradually established a platform to work their way back into the game.

Unsurprisingly Katie McAleese was central to that comeback, but the Kellys, Nuala, Anna and Roisin, also stepped up to the mark and by half-time the scores were tied at 2-2 to 1-5.

Rossa had that great start, but they didn’t really spark to life after that, although opportunities from placed balls could well have won the game for them, if they had taken them.

Tierna Johnson and Louise McMullan were sound at the back and Maureen Quinn a consistent threat up front as Mairiosa McGourty faded after that impressive start.

At 2-1 to 0-0 down, Portglenone finally got going and hit four unanswered points (three from Katie McAleese and the other from Niamh McKee) ahead of a Jane Carey goal in the 22nd minute to level the game.

Katie and Bronagh Orchin swopped scores as the teams went in level at the turnover, 2-2 to 1-5.

It was score for score through a low-scoring third quarter which ended with Bronagh Orchin putting her side into a 2-5 to 1-7 lead. That however was to prove the Belfast side’s last score as Anna Kelly hit two fine points to push her side ahead for the first time.

Katie McAleese popped over yet another point in the 53rd minute and, despite there being some nine minutes of playing time left, Rossa couldn’t reel in the two points’ gap.
