Rossa clinch minor league title with hard fought win over Cushendall

Rossa clinched the Minor Hurling League on Saturday when they travelled to Cushendall and beat the Ruairi Og side in a high quality contest.

The home side got off to a great start with 2 points from Scott Walsh and a goal from wing forward Christy McLaughlin but Rossa responded with 2 points from Tiernan Murphy and 1 from Dominic McEnhill to leave just a point between the sides.

Niall McCormack then hit a great point for Ruairi Og but Rossa came back with points from Daire Murphy and Daire Matthews to level the scores, but the home side regained the lead when Niall McCormack hit a real gem of a goal when he soloed through the Rossa defence and slammed the ball into the net to leave Cushendall up by 4 with 10 to go in the 1st half.

Tiernan Murphy then raised a green flag for Rossa to set you a frantic finish to the first half but Ronan McCambridge and Donall Kearney responded with points for Ruairi Og. After Tiernan Murphy pulled a point back for Rossa.  Christy McLaughlin responded for Ruairi Og but as pace reached fever pitch Tiernan Murphy fired in another goal for Rossa to keep the game was bubbling nicely. The teams were deadlocked at this stage but Ruairi Og knocked over the last 2 points of the half through Scott Walsh and Niall McCormack to leave the half time score: Ruairi Og 2-8 Rossa 2-6.

 

Rossa started the 2nd half like men on a mission and quickly wiped out Ruairi Ogs 2 point advantage and pushed in front through points from Eoin McMenamin, Michael Close, Tiernan Murphy and Daire Matthews.  Scott Walsh tried to stem the tide with a point for Ruairi Og but Dominic McEnhill slammed in another goal for the Shaw’s Road boys and they looked like pulling away.

To be fair to Ruairi Og, they kept on going and Ronan McAteer knocked over a nice point to leave a goal in it with 15 minutes to play. Tiernan Murphy responded as he knocked over a nice point for Rossa and Ronan McAteer responded with another point to still leave a goal in it.

Ruairi Og got a boost when Rossa full back Mark McCavanagh got sent off for a 2nd bookable offence, but it was Rossa who scored next 2 points through by Eoin McMenamin and Tiernan Murphy.

Ronan McCambridge pulled one back for Ruairi Og then Ed McQuillan went on a strong solo run and got hit on the head by a thrown hurl and the referee sent the offending player for an early bath. Scott Walsh sent the resultant free to the back of the Rossa net to leave just 1 point between the sides, but the clock was to beat the Ruairi Og challengeonce the poc-out was taken the referee blew the full time whistle and Rossa had won on a scoreline of Ruairi Og 3-12 Rossa 3-13.

This result meant that Rossa went undefeated in ACMHL (A) and received their trophy from County Board Representative Alex McQuillan who presented the trophy to Rossa Captain Tiernan Murphy.
