Under 21 A Football Championship
St Brigid’s 2-10 Con Magees 0-0
Con Magees Glenravel, the team who won the first ever Under 21 championship back in 1964 wrote another page in the record books today when they must surely have become the first team never to score in a U21 Championship game. St Brigid’s were just too good for their opponents in this game, which was switched at the last minute to Harlequins RFC. The Belfast side were 2-6 to 0-0 ahead at the break and though Glenravel fared better in the second period, and had plenty of possession they just couldn’t trouble the scoreboard operators.
Peter Webb put St Brigid’s ahead in the fourth minute and after Daniel Black came close to scoring a goal for the visitors St Brigid’s got one at the other end as Peter Henvey forced the ball home after a goalmouth scramble. Soon afterwards the writing was on the wall for the visitors when James Smth grabbed the winners second goal as they went on to open up a 2-6 to 0-0 half time lead.
It was clear the game was well and truly decided as the second half got underway and in truth there was little on offer for either set of supporters in what turned out to be a dire second half. With the game already sown up St Brigid’s took their foot off the pedal and their play became scrappy and disjointed. They did manage a further four points and while Glenravel did have their chances they just could not break their duck.
St Brigid’s now face Cargin next weekend in the last of the quarter-finals back at Harlequins.
