St Anthony’s win Larne Schools Hurling Cup

thumbnailSt Anthony’s have won the Larne Schools Hurling Cup for the first time since 2014!  This years tournament had four participating teams, one more than usual with St MacNissi’s entering two teams. All four teams played each other once in a mini league with the top two playing off in an extended final.
After the six league games only goal difference separated St Anthony’s and Corran; both teams won 2 out of 3 games, with the two St MacNissi’s teams winning a game each.
The final really was a game of two halves.  When the half time whistle blew Corran Integrated had scored three first half goals and were well ahead.  An early 2nd half penalty sparked the St Anthony’s comeback; two more goals meant the tense final ended in a draw.  The game then went to golden goal extra time and got a bit hot and heavy with a long stoppage for an injured player only adding to the tension.  After another frantic minute St Anthony’s captain Darcie McNeill found the net to take the trophy back to Antiville for the first time in four years.
This years event was another great opportunity for primary school boys and girls from the town of Larne to play meaningful hurling games at a competitive level.
