Antrim who made it two wins out of two in the All Ireland B Camogie Championshiop with a big win over Kildare
Kildare 1-4 Antrim 1-12
By Seamus McAleenan
Ciara Laverty got Antrim off to the perfect start with a third minute goal in this second round game of the All-Ireland Minor B championship at Hawkfield on Saturday.
The sides had contested a closely-fought Minor final last year, but the Saffrons controlled this game from start to finish with Eilish Kearins outstanding at full-back, a half-back line that defended well by attacking every ball played in their direction and then a midfield pairing of Maeve Kelly and Roisin McCormick who between them contributed five points from play and three more from frees.
Indeed a feature of the first half scoring was that all Antrim’s 1-7 came from open play, while Kildare’s three points were all frees converted by Holly Tynan.
The first of those frees came in the 8th minute, by which time Antrim had scored 1-1.
Then there was a run of five unanswered Antrim points started by Charley McCarry that left them in a healthy 1-6 to 0-1 lead. Two of those scores stood out, Roisin McCormick’s glorious point and a 17th minute score from Maura Downey.
After the break Holly Tynan pointed another Kildare free, but Rosin McCormick immediately responded from play and Antrim pushed on with another four points, three from McCormick before right on the whistle Holly Tynan got in for a late consolation goal.
