Brilliant St Ronan’s book All Ireland final place

Masita GAA All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Hogan Cup CRLL3440St Ronan’s Rioghan Meehan whose brilliant goal got the Ulster champions off to a great start.

The dream keeps on going for Lurgan’s St Ronan’s College. Formed less than three years ago they have followed last week’s maiden MacRory Cup win with victory over Kerry and Munster champions Pobalscoil Chorca Duibhne in today’s Hogan Cup semi-final. Kerry schools have had a stranglehold on the Hogan Cup in recent years and with Kerry senior manager Eamon Fitzmaurice in charge the boys from the Kingdom were expected to brush aside the challenge of the Ulster winners in Wednesday’s semi-final. However the MacCrory Cup champions had other ideas, and producing a display of football that probably even surpassed last week’s win over St Mary’s Magherafelt, they booked a place in next weekend’s All Ireland final with a 2-10 to 1-10 win.

Just as they had done in the MacCrory final St Ronan’s got off to a good start and a brilliantly taken goal by Rioghan Meehan had the confidence levels high. Meehan, who was man of the match in the MacCrory Cup final picked up the ball on the right wing an curled a brilliant shot into the far corner of the PCD net. The Lurgan school’s hopes received a set-back when the Kerry school goaled through Dylan Geaney at the other end as half time approached, a score which gave the Kerry school a point lead at the break.

St Ronan’s were undaunted though and came out in confident fashion in the second half, just as they had done when trailing to St Mary’s in MacCrory final. Again there was little to chose between the sides but a cooly taken goal by Josh Megoran in the 55th minute clinched a magnificent victory as the special buzz around the school continues. St Ronan’s, who have no less than nine Aghagallon players in the panel now face Rice College of Westport in the final at Croke Park on Saturday week.

The dream goes on.
