Ladies U16 Football League

Moneyglass made the journey to Glenavy on Tuesday evening to kick start the U16 league campaign. St. Ergnat’s, with a relatively young team, started the brighter with a goal and a point from Maria O’Neill which was followed up by well worked scores from Sarah O’Neill, Ciara Scullin and Alyx Walsh. Glenavy defence worked hard to get the ball into their half forward line who notched 1-2 between Niamh Steele and Ellen Morgan to narrow Moneyglass’ lead. Excellent kick outs from Hannah Murray and tighter defending from Emma Taggart and Saoirse McErlain allowed Moneyglass to get back on top and they were clinical in front of the posts with points from Caoimhe McErlain and Maria O’Neill. Going into half time Moneyglass had a comfortable lead but the move of Niamh Steele into full forward straight after half time pushed Glenavy on as she struck three unanswered goal in the opening five minutes Niamh to put Moneyglass under some pressure. The Moneyglass girl’s got their act together however and some outstanding work from Maria and Sarah O’Neill and Aoife Kelly allowed midfielders Niamh McKeefrey and Jude McCoy to build attacks, one of which Dearbhla McCann got on the end of for a well finished goal. The visitors dominated the final 15minutes, finishing with 9 different scorers, despite excellent pressure from the Glenavy back line. A great game to start the U16 league with plenty of talent on view from both sides.
