All County Football League – Division 2

O’Donnell’s 0-5 Gort na Mona 1-15

Gort na Mona sit proudly at the top of the Division 2 league table after their convincing 1-15 to 0-5 win over O’Donnell’s at O’Donnell Park on Sunday. The men from Turf Lodge were in charge from early on and took a firm grip on proceedings when full forward Shane Scullion scored the only goal of the game on eleven minutes. O’Donnell’s had a world of possession, and created numerous chances, but they always found scores hard to come by and in the end it was their undoing.

Playing down the slope towards the city end Gort na Mona got their first score of the game on 5 minutes when centre half forward Darren Boyd pointed a free from thirty metres. A minute later they were two clear when full forward Shane Scullion raced out to collect a ball in the left corner before soling in alone the end line and sending over from a narrow angle.  Six minutes later Scullion was again the man to do the damage when good work on the left by corner forward Brendan Corry sent Scullion in on goal with the O’Donnell’s keeper and he made no mistake as he drilled the ball low to the left corner of the net.

The visitors looked comfortable at this stage but they were to go a further seventeen minutes before raising another flag as O’Donnell’s dominated possession. However their shooting let them down as they shot wide after wide, and also dropped several short into the keeper’s hands. All they had to show for it was a point from Patrick Meenan who finished really well from the left corner. Gort na Mona ended their barren spell when Scullion knocked over a free on 28 minutes and though the home side replied with their second point through corner forward Kevin Kennedy an injury time pointed free by Darren Boyd gave the visitors a 1-4 to 0-2 lead at half time.14O’Donnell’s goalkeeper Conor Walsh tips the ball over the bar.
