Gort na Mona 2.17 Cushendun 0.07

This was the proverbial game of two halves. The first half was nip and tuck throughout with the lead being shared 5 times, with Gort Na Mona pointing on 30 minutes to go in with a 1 point lead. The second half was all Gort Na Mona as they out-scored Cushendun by 15 points to run out comfortable winners.

Cushendun  started well with points from Peirce Bannon, Eoin McQuillian and Mathew McCartin but the in-form Desi McClean kept the score board ticking over for the Gorts.

Following a James Morgan point from play and two Conleth McNeill frees and a red card on 24 mins for Gort Na Mona’s Connor Connelly, Cushendun looked well placed to challenge for the win. But the city boys pushed on and finished the half with points from Paddy McCaffery, Paddy McHugh and a pointed free from the ever reliable McClean to go in 0.07 to 0.06 ahead.

A Conor McHugh free in the first minute of the 2nd half leveled matters, but this was the last flag the Emmets would raise all night. A goal for Gorts’ Darren Boyd a minute later set them on their way. Four more pointed frees from McClean and a point from Paddy McCaffery, followed by Boyd’s second goal of the night, rocked the Emmets and the match was over as a contest at this stage. Boyd and sub Ciaran McMullan got another point each, but it was left to Desie McClean to put the gloss on a great performance for Gort Na Mona with 3 more points to take his tally for the night to 11 points.
