O’Neill’s All County Under 16 Huring League – Division 1
Cushendall 7-17 Glenariff 2-10
Glenariffe made the short trip around the Coast Road on Monday evening to play Ruairi Og, Cushendall in the All County U16 Antrim league as the juvenile hurling got back underway after the exams break.
Cushendall showed their hosts some generous hospitality in the opening minutes as Glenariffe scored 1-1 through Shea Mc Donnell, however, they hit back with a point from Conleith Mc Kinley and when Fiontin Mc Quillan goaled in the tenth minute to level the game, this brought the hosts back in to the game.
Glenariffe were awarded a penalty in the fourteen minute but the ball was fired over the bar for a point and from the resultant puck out Padraig Mc Killop gained possession and fed Matthew Mc Cann whom dispatched to the net despite being under severe pressure from the visitors defence. Glenariffe responded with three points in as many minutes, but these were quickly cancelled out by Pierce Mc Keegan who goaled after reacting quickest to a free from Fiontan Mc Quillan. With an exchange of points and another goal from Conleith Mc Kinley in the 29th minute, this left the half time score 4-4 to 1-7 to the home team.
The second half started much as the first half had finished with Conleith Mc Kinley goaling in the second minute. With Padraig Mc Killop and Fiontan Mc Quillan sharing seven points between them in the next fifteen minutes to a solitary Mickey O’Boyle point, it was very much game over. After sub Joe Mc Naughton added a goal and a point in addition to another Cushendall goal from Padraig Mc Killop in the 24th minute, it was a matter of seeing the game out.
Best for Cushendall were Colin Mc Keegan in nets who pulled off a series of saves to deny Glenariffe goals. He was well supported by Mark Emerson, Conor Mc Collam and James Mc Allister in defence. Shane Mc Kenna dominated midfield while up front Fiontan Mc Quillan, Pierce Mc Keegan, Padraig Mc Killop and Conleith Mc Kinley were the scoring threats.
For Glenariff Mickey O’Boyle, Gabriel Leech and Shea Mc Donnell were the dominant players.
