Saints advance despite conceding bagful of goals

All Saints 2-20  Tir na nOg 6-3

All Saints advanced to the South West U16 football league final with an exhibition of fine attacking football, scoring 2-20 on the night and at a first glance this would appear to have been a comfortable victory for the home side but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Despite dominating possession for long periods and opening up the visitors defence time and again with their strong attacking play they were never able to shake off a dogged Tir na nOg side who kept themselves in touch with their ability to score goals.

Indeed it took a goal from Adrian Scullion from the penalty spot in the 59th minute to put a bit of daylight between the sides at a time where the Whitehill side were threatening to turn the game on its head.

It was all so different early in the game as All Saints raced into a 1-3 to 0-0 lead after eight minutes with Jake White, Jack Agnew, and Aidan Scullion getting g the points before Ronan McKillop got in for an excellent goal.

Connor McCamphill got the visitors on their way with a goal in the 9th minute but the home side appeared to have weathered the storm as they replied with points from Jake White, Ronan McKillop, Aidan Scullion, Ryan McCartney and Oisin Connolly as the blistering pace of the Ballymena half-forward line opened up the visitors defence time and again.

As the Quinn Park side pushed forward in numbers they were often guilty of leaving the back door open and they were punished when Colla McDonald got in for Tir na nOg’s second goal and McDonald followed quickly with a point to serve notice that his side hadn’t come to make up the numbers.

Points from Patrick Ferris and the excellent McKillop stretched the home side lead once more but they continued to look less than comfortable in defence as Casper Logan forced the ball home from close range in the 23d minute after Jason Givens in the All Saints goals pulled off a good save to deny Colla McDonald.

All Saints finished the half with points from Ronan McKillop and Aidan Scullion to lead 1-11 to 3-1 at the break and despite enjoying a lot of possession they were only four in front and it looked like they still had much work to do in the second half.

MUCH OF THE SAME

Normal service seemed to have been restored as the Ballymena side came out strongly at the start of the second half with points from Aidan Scullion, Patrick Ferris, Ronan McKillop and Scullion again and it took the visitors 14 minutes to open their second half account with a point from Ethan Higgins.

It heralded another turn around in the Randalstown side’s  fortunes however and as they began to run the ball at the opposition they got in for goals from Paddy Dougan and Casper Logan and suddenly there was only four between the sides again with the All Saints management looking on nervously.

Aidan Scullion from a well struck 40 meter free and Ronan McKillop with an excellent point after a blistering solo run settled them down again and then Scullion picked himself up of the ground after being pulled down in full flight to fire home the resulting penalty in the 59th minute to secure victory.

Tir na nOg fought right to the final whistle and a point from Connor McCamphill  and a Casper Logan goal in the 63d minute cut the deficit to five points but it proved too little too late as All Saints advance to their second U16 final of the season.

A month back All Saints turned in a great performance to defeat St. James’ Aldergrove in the Breslin Cup final but their form has dipped since then and last week they conceded 8 goals against St. James in Crumlin and after leaking another six tonight this will be a worrying development for managers Gerard O’Callaghan, Eamon McKillop and their team of selectors.

All hands on deck as Saints safely negotiate first hurdle

Kennedy Centre Ladies Junior Football Championship

St Teresa’s 3 06

All Saints  8 16

All Saints travelled to their Glen Rd opponents not having played a competitive fixture since July 8th.

It was an all hands on deck approach with two of the team just off the plane from holidays only hours before the throw in , another 3 who managed to arrange shift changes and one who negotiated a 100 mile round trip to turn out in the black and white

Saints started strongly and an opening goal from Shannon Woulahan followed by a brace of points from Maria Sestakova suggested that All Saints would be a good bet for a place in the next round

St Teresa’s had a stand out performer in goal however and during the first half her handling and distribution was excellent.

The Glen Road side were strong going forward and their efficient ball carrying troubled the Ballymena girls on a number of occasions.  In the opening half all St Teresa’s scores bar one came from open play

Goals from Maria Sestakova and Anna Kearney and a point form Ciara Devine contributed to put the Saints 3 07 to 1 06 up at half time.

During the half time break the now customary honest chat took place and Saints warmed to the task quickly. Some tactical adjustments were implemented and Kalie Little helped herself to  two goals in the second half, the first set up by Sharon McNiff and the latter by Sianeese Maybin

During the second period of play St Teresa’s were restricted to two score both penalty kicks and Saints were much improved from back to front and won much more ball from St Teresa’s kick outs

At the back Maria O Rawe and Marnie O Neill were best for All Saints. The half back line of Ciara Devine, Katie Connolly and Sinead Devine was solid throughout the hour and snuffed out a lot of St. Teresa’s possession particularly in the second half.

Aine McVeigh put in another big shift at midfield but her partner in this area of the field deserves special mention. Molly Brady was excellent and her appetite for the game makes her a joy to coach

Anna Kearney Maria Sestakova and Shannon Woulahan are all potential match winners any weekend and on the night this trio contributed 6-11 of the Saints tally with Anna top scoring on 3-04

Bronagh Shannon marked her return  following a nasty knee injury scoring 0-02 on the night while Kalie Little scored 2 02 but it was her fielding of the ball and positional play that caught the eye.

Maria Goldring ran her socks off as usual and hit the woodwork twice before grabbing a point,

overall a very pleasing performance by the All Saints girls

Cuchullains win Under 16 A title

Antrim Under 16 A Camogie Championship final

Cuchullains Dunloy 3-11 MacUilin Ballycastle 2-9

Dunloy won the Under 16A Camogie title when they beat Ballycastle in Wednesday evening’s final at Fr Healy Park, Loughgiel. A scoring burst at the end of the first half, and at the start of the second pulled the Cuchullains eleven clear and it looked like they would cruise to the title, but Ballycastle made them work for their victory and two late goals brought them back to within four. It was a little nervy for the winners for a minute or two but in truth they were always secure and Cassie McArthur sealed it with a late point and had it not been for a couple of outstanding saves by Becky Ellis in the Ballycastle goal it could have been more.

Ballycastle started well and with Riana McBride causing no end of problems for the Dunloy defence they went 0-4 to 0-1 ahead after nine minutes, all four coming from McBride, while the excellent Cassie McArthur got the Dunloy point. However Dunloy were slowly getting on top and points from Aine Magill and Cassie McArthur brought the gap back to a point. Caitlin Heggarty put two between the sides again with a well take point in the eleventh minute but when Aine Magill raced through to set up McArthur for the game’s first goal in the 16th minute Dunloy took control. They dominated the second quarter as McArthur and Aine Magill combined well for a series of excellent scores, McArthur getting her second goal in first half injury time to send her team in at the break with a 2-6 to 0-6 lead.20

When Magill completed her hat-trick two minutes into the second half it was a long way back for Ballycastle and it got even worse the Magill sisters Bronagh and Aine added points. There was a spark left in Ballycastle yet however and when Nuala Devlin broke through for a goal on 46 minutes there was a glimmer of hope. Dunloy were still comfortable but a great spell from Rhiana McBride which brought a goal and three in the final quarter closed the gap to just four. Dunloy were still in control and creating the chances but two outstanding saves by Ballycastle goalkeeper Becky Ellis, the first one when denying Bronagh Magill what looked like a certain goal had shades of Limerick goalkeeper Nicky Quaid’s flick to deny Cork’s Patrick Horgan in the All Ireland semi-final. However Dunloy were not to be outdone and player of the match Cassie McArthur ended the game as she started it, with a point from play to clinch a hard fought title.
