Ulster Schools’ Ladies’ Under 16 football Shield
St Killian’s Garron Tower 2-8 St Mark’s Warrenpoint 2-7
A last minute point from Con Magee’s Aisling Mulholland edged this thrilling Ulster Schools’ quarter-final in favour of the girls from St Killian’s. Both teams wasted chances throughout the game but particularly during the last quarter when the pressure was on to get over the line.
During that period both Aisling and Orla Donnelly turned over ball in their half-back line, key interceptions as St Mark’s hit them on the break with extra players on the overlap. From one of those turnovers, Aisling Donnelly worked the ball through Niamh McKay and Jaime Woulahan and finally Aisling Mulholland clipped her shot over the bar.
St Killian’s opened well and, while they wasted several goal chances, points from Niamh McKay and Aisling Mulholland put them four points clear after ten minutes.
St Mark’s came back strongly and Emer O’Toole fired home a breakaway goal to edge her team ahead. Although Aisling Mulholland picked up a short kickout and lobbed the goalie for a goal for the Antrim side, O’Toole hit back with another goal for Warrenpoint and they pushed on to lead by 2-4 to 1-4 at the break.
Despite playing against the diagonal breeze, St Killian’s took the game to Warrenpoint during the third quarter and went ahead when points from Jaime Woulahan and Niamh McKay was followed by a goal-mouth scramble and Niamh McKay finished to the net.
Warrenpoint however closed the gap with a point only for Niamh McKay to tap over a free and restore a two points advantage for St Killian’s. But that was their only score for the next 15 minutes as they and Warrenpoint squandered good openings. Eventually St Mark’s drew level and had a couple of chances to take the lead.
However St Killian’s dug deep and that late Mulholland point sees them into a semi-final against either St Aidan’s Derrylin or Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dóbhair who play later this week.
