South West Cumann na mBunscol Indoor 5-a-side
St. Oliver Plunkett’s Primary School, Toome were the winners of last week’s indoor 5-a-side Camogie blitz at Antrim Forum. In an exciting days Camogie the Toome girls came out top in a tournament that included, St. Mary’s P.S., Portglenone, Creggan P.S., Mary Queen of Peace, Glenravel, Millquarter P.S., St. Brigid’s P.S., Ballymena, St. Patrick’s P.S., Rasharkin, St. Paul’s P.S., Ahoghill and Mount St. Michaels P.S.
A promising nine schools participated, forming twelve teams and thus plenty of camogie to be enjoyed.
In group one St. Patrick’s Rasharkin began proceedings with a convincing win over Creggan, maintaining this fine form throughout all their group games to top their group unbeaten. Finishing second in group one, only losing points to the Rasharkin girls was St. Brigid’s Ballymena. Last year’s title holders St. Mary’s Portglenone also provided noteworthy competition and determination in this group.
Group two saw a similar sequence with St. Oliver Plunkett of Toome dominating this group with a strong, skilful team. Taking second place was an energetic Mary Queen of Peace, again only losing one game to group leaders. Narrowly missing out on a semi-final spot was Millquarter who produced some promising performances.
The first of the semi-finals saw St. Patrick’s Rasharkin take on Mary Queen of Peace Glenravel. This fight for a final spot was hotly contested in an exciting game with team mates vocally getting behind their school friends. At the final whistle only a goal separated the teams with Mary Queen of Peace victorious on a score line of 2 – 1.
St. Brigid’s and St. Oliver Plunkett’s played in the second semi which remained tight up until the final few minutes before St. Oliver Plunkett’s secured their final place with a score line of 4-2.
With the finalists having already played each other in a close encounter in the group stages, it was time to see if either team had done their homework following their earlier meeting. Both teams defended intently throughout the game with many significant saves made. In the end only a single goal was scored by first time winners St. Oliver Plunkett’s Toome.
