South West Feile (under-14) Semi Final
St Enda’s 0-03 Erin’s Own Cargin 11-06
Holders Cargin eased their way into the 2019 decider when they proved too strong for a brave St Enda’s in a decidedly one sided affair at a blustery Hightown on Sunday.
St Enda’s came from off the pace to get the better of Creggan in Wednesday’s semi-final but never realised the sort of form they showed in that one and after a storming start to proceedings and a three goal haul in the opening five minutes the winners never looked back.
Cargin had sown the seeds of victory right from the off and although a couple of early attacks went for naught a 3rd minute Ryan O’ Neill point saw them settle to the task on hand.
The wing half forward was quick to add to his early tally as he was sent away by a Ben McLarnon delivery to find the net less than a minute later as the holders gained traction on the windswept Hightown sod.
The home side really needed an early score to banish the butterflies but the Cargin defence in which full back Hugh O’ Donnell and centre back Callum Gribbin excelled throughout, proved immovable in the early stages.
Strong in the defensive, dominant in the central zone and very efficient in attack, Cargin went further ahead when the impressive Conhuir Johnston bagged a couple of early goals.
Ciaran Mc Peake then moved forward to lob to the net and the Erin’s Own lads were 4-01 to 0-00 ahead by the 8th minute and it already looked as good as over.
Cargin added to their ever increasing advantage when Charlie McCann bagged a goal and although the home side opened account via a Ryan Ferguson point such was negated by a brace from Ryan O’ Neill.
It was backs to the wall for the Hightown lads as Cargin applied pressure and indeed when Ryan Kelly, who had really impressed in their quarter final win over Creggan advanced in search of a score the Cargin full back Hugh O’ Donnell was there to intercept and clear to initiate a counter attack.
Conhuir Johnston sent Ryan O’ Neill in search of another goal but when the latter was upended in approach at the expense of a penalty the former made no mistake from the spot.
Having started on the positive and grown in stature throughout Cargin finished strongly with Cahir O’ Boyle bagging another goal with a subtle strike after Callum Gribbin’s delivery opened the way.
Cian Scullion and Conhuir Johnston then combined to place Diarmuid Quinn to finish to the net and Cargin had moved 8-02 to 0-01 ahead at the half way mark and looked on the way to another feile final.
Despite what had gone before the home side were not to toss in the proverbial towel as they continued to battle as the second half commenced.
St. Enda’s were quickly into attack as they took the game to their opponents but could find no way through a resolute Cargin defence.
Hugh O’ Donnell halted the passage of Ryan Murray as he advanced on goal and centre back Callum Gribbin was asked similar question as he foiled another St. Enda’s attack.
After surviving early pressure Cargin replied in the 26th minute as Diarmuid Quinn tested the resolve of the St Enda’s net minder who did well to turn the corner forward’s drive over his cross bar.
Ben Mc Larnon added a point in the 27th minute just before a strong Callum Gribbin intervention and delivery opened the way for Diarmuid Quinn to add a goal and Conhuir Johnson added another as the holders started to again turn the screw.
The end was obviously in sight as both the sides started to empty their benches and St Enda’s were finally rewarded with a couple of late scores as Darragh Moss and Aaron Murphy raised white flags apiece.
Cargin had the last say however as further scores from Conhuir Johnston (goal) and a Charlie McCann point saw them conclude at 11-06 to 0-03 on way to the final.
