Loughgiel battle back in second half

McQuillan’s 1.13 Loughgiel 5.14

McQuillan’s and Loughgiel camogs served up a great game of camogie in their 3rd clash of the week, this time it was the turn of the D2 girls. McQuillan’s raced to an early lead with points from Aoife Toner and Fionnuala Kelly before Cara Mc Intyre slotted over for the home side. Nuala Devlin and Alica Butler added 2 more in a period of dominance for Mc Quillan’s before Annie Lynn grabbed Loughgiel’s second point. The visitors continued to press forward and went on to a 0.6 to 0.2 lead with 20 minutes gone thanks to Emma Laverty and Maria Bakewell. The Shamrock girls responded well with a goal pushed over the line by Cara McIntyre which was to be the first of her 2 goals in this half. Ciara Laverty also raised a green flag to put Loughgiel ahead by 2points which were soon cancelled out by the hard working Emma Laverty and Maria Bakewell pointing to level the sides for the second time. A goal came from a free was lobbed in by Emma Laverty for Mc Quillan’s nudged the Ballycastle girls ahead, while her cousin Ciara Laverty scored twice with Fionnuala Kelly pointing just before the half time whistle to level the teams at 1.10 to 3.4.

The second half saw Loughgiel come out of the traps stronger, with substitute Anna Connolly causing havoc with her strong runs exploiting space in the McQuillan’s defence pointing twice. Fionnuala Toner and Bronagh McCaughan and Caitlin Heggarty mopped up serious pressure as the Loughgiel girls hit form and sent over 6 more points from Carla McGarry, Kirsty McKendry, Charley McCarry and Louise McKillop, while Ballycastle only converted 3 of their chances from the in-form Nuala Devlin and Maria Bakewell. Loughgiel’s defence was solid with Aoife O’Mullan, Katie Lynn and Megan McGarry thwarting the visitors’ attacks. At this stage McQuillan’s were trailing by 5 points and despite the efforts of Niamh O’Neill and Christina Donnelly they were unable to raise another flag during the last 10 minutes. Charley McCarry and Mary McKillen finished off the game with 2 superbly taken goals to leave the game settled at 5.14 to 1.13. Referee Vincent Boyle commended both teams on the excellent standard of play, saying it was one of the best games he has seen all year!
