All County Minor League Division 1(round two)
Erin’s Own Cargin 2-11 Con Magees Glenravel 1-04
Following a humiliating opening round defeat at the hands of the visiting All Saint’s, Cargin opened their account at the second time of asking when they proved too strong for visitors Glenravel in Toome on Tuesday evening.
The Con Magees kept in touch with their hosts in the opening period and were only a few points in arrears at half time but much of that was due to the wasteful nature of the home side as the Cargin wides tally had reached double figures when the match official called a temporary halt.
The Toome lads started the second half in a more positive mode and when they raised a trio of whites in as many minutes and Paudie Mc Laughlin followed with a 35th minute goal the die was cast.
The Con Magees retained focus in the quest for scores but in the event they were not to give further employment to the scoreboard attendant until the 52nd minute and by such juncture the writing was on the wall.
Little separated the sides in the opening minutes and after Pat Shivers and Ryan Lennon swapped points the home side’s Jack Mc Allister raced through to raise an 8th minute white flag.
Both sides in turn were guilty of wastefulness in front of the posts but although mid fielder Pat Shivers helped himself to a further brace of points to ensure a 0-03 to 0-01 advantage it did not herald a change.
The Toome lads were dominant but well laid approaches were not rewarded with scores as the old wasteful trend in front of posts returned.
Cargin eventually extend their advantage when Sean Og O’Neill and Malachai Johnston combined to send Tom Shivers away on the left hand side to fire over before Glenravel, who had also wasted opportunities, added a 27th minute point via the hard grafting Sean Mc Kay who finished expertly between the posts.
The home side were to have the last say in proceedings as a smart Interception at the back and a Benen Kelly delivery paved the way for a 29th minute Paudie Mc Laughlin point and the home side led 0-06 to 0-02 at the interval.
Having proved wasteful for much of the opening period Cargin started in the second thirty minutes in the utmost accuracy which saw a trio of white flags raised in as many minutes.
Paudie Mc Laughlin nipped through to split the posts in the opening minute with Jack Mc Allister and centre back Sean Og O’Neill following suit in the 32nd and 33rd minutes respectively.
The Cargin lads were now firing on all cylinders and when Malachai Johnston delivered to the skill laden Paudie Mc Laughlin the centre forward was clinical in the finish as he delivered to the net to see his side move into a 1-09 to 0-02 lead.
It was backs to the wall for the Con Magees but a further Paudie Mc Laughlin point and a 46th minute goal, delivered from the penalty spot by Pat Shivers after PJ Quinn was fouled inside the area, put the home side out of reach.
Pat Shivers added a further point shortly after from a left sided free to punish an indiscretion on his sibling Tom.
The 15 year old younger Shivers impressed throughout and certainly looks one for the future.
Glenravel having been under the Cosh for the opening twenty minutes were not to lose focus however and showed a bit of character to produce a strong finish.
Joe Martin and the hard working Sean Mc Kay added points apiece before Joe Martin moved in to find the net, getting the better of the excellent Cargin net minder Odhran Molloy. However Cargin, despite conceding those late scores, had plenty in hand at the conclusion crossing the line with the points secured at 2-11 to 1-04.
