Cargin too strong for gallant Tir na nOg

Breslin Cup (under-16)

Tir na Nog Randalstown 0-08 Erin’s Own Cargin 8-19

Cargin installed themselves as favourites for the Breslin Cup following a comprehensive victory over Tir na nOg at Whitehill on Thursday night. After a slow start the Toome side took control and by half time they were well on their way to a place in the next round.

The Whitehill lads, who remain unbeaten in the league this term started in a confident mode and fully deserved an early lead when Shane Hinfey opened account with a 2nd minute point and when both Dara Martin and Oran Murray followed suit they had an early 0-03 to 0-00 advantage.

Cargin on the other hand looked less than composed in the opening minutes but as the impressive Eunan Quinn and his equally able partner Odhran Molloy got to grips with the goings on in the central zone they improved dramatically.

It was a subtle combination between Eunan Quinn and Conhuir Johnston which opened the way for corner forward Tom Shivers to find the net and the 9th minute strike saw the Toome boys to draw level.

Cargin were gaining in authority and after an excellent Odhran Molloy point saw them claim advantage they grew in confidence as Tom Shivers added a point with Eunan Quinn and Conor Kelly following suit.

The home side replied when centre forward Seamus grant was sent forward by the hard grafting Josh Higgins to grab an 18th minute point but any hope of a comeback was soon to be doused as the visitors finished the period strongly.

Conhuir Johnston and Tom Shivers added points apiece and the hard working Conan Kennedy placed Tom Shivers to add a second goal and see the Erin’s Own lads at 2-07 to 0-04 at the short blast.

If the Whitehill Blues were to retain interest a good start to second half proceedings was required but in the event it was Cargin who were quicker into stride as Eunan Quinn landed a couple of early scores before Tom Shivers completed his hat trick as he was fastest to the rebound after Shane Gribbin’s shot rebounded of the crossbar to return to the net.

Tir na nOg opened their second half account when their best on view Josh Higgins added a 37th minute point but Cargin were quick to return to the offensive as Conor Kelly found the net again after raising a white flag.

Eunan Quinn (2) and Shane Gribbin  gave further employment to the scoreboard attendant as Cargin moved 4-12to 0-05 ahead end of the third quarter and the die was well cast.

The Whitehill lads never gave up but Cargin were not  about to relent as they continued to press forward.

Conor Kelly collected a real eye catching 47th minute goal and further goals from Benen Kelly, Tom Shivers, and Shane Gribbin (2), saw them run out convincing winners

The home side had last say as centre back Daniel O’ Neill and Josh Higgins collected late points but such arrived as consolation with Cargin easing over the line in complete charge, 8-19 to 0-08.
