Football Fixtures and Previews (Sunday 9th June)

It is a case of prime time viewing for the football fraternity this Sunday as the leagues continue.

The opening phase of the competition in both Division One, and Two approaches and the ‘split’ prior to completion follows as the top six will proceed to determine league winners whilst the remaining sides compete to decide on the relegation issue.

Division One (3.00pm)

Erin’s Own Cargin v St Teresa’s

Having lost out in their opening game Cargin have remained unbeaten although they shared the points with both St John’s and St Gall’s.

Cargin reside at the top of the league and will be favoured to remain so after this one as St Teresa’s pay a visit.

St.Teresa’s have just a couple of wins to date in 2019 but they are capable of better.

The West Belfast side gave the visiting Johnnies a game last time only losing by a couple of points and that possibly underlines improvement as they contemplate a trip to Toome.

Cargin will start as firm favourites and although St Teresa’s may well come in positivity a home win does seem likely.

St Mary’s Aghagallon v St Mary’s Ahoghill

The points at stake in this one look of vital importance as basement dwelling St Mary’s Ahoghill visit Aghagallon with the home side just a place ahead in the ratings.

The Cloney men did hint at improvement last time with the return to action of long term absentees they gave reigning league champions Creggan a game.

Dultagh Johnston’s men were much involved in that one until a strong finishing Kickham’s side pulled away in the latter stages.

Aghagallon took time to get going this term but a 2-15 to 0-08 win away to Gort na Mona last time signalled better.

They will return to their own sod this time and will welcome their visitors in a positive mode.

This does look a close one and although Aghagallon will start proceedings as favourites Ahoghill should not be discounted.

Kickham’s Creggan v St Enda’s

Kevin Madden’s Creggan having endured a few defeats early in the league but have returned to winning ways of late.

The reigning league champions have completed a three in a row winning run with a 1-16 to 2-08 win at Ahoghill last time and will return to the Staffordstown road this time in confidence as they welcome St Enda’s.

St Enda’s started the season well with a win over Cargin but the reigning Intermediate champions have proved rather enigmatic in their offerings since that one.

Having just three positive returns to their credit the Hightown men will look for more but this seems a tough assignment in the South West.

Creggan will start as firm favourites and although their visitors may well be capable of better a home win looks probable.

Casement’s Portglenone v St Gall’s

This one may well prove the ‘match of the day’ as Casement’s play hosts to the St Gall’s with a big crowd expected at the Portglenone venue.

Casement’s have been in fine form this term and a win up at Hannahstown last time was an excellent result.

They are only a point in arrears of the pace setters and with a first ever division one league title still very much in sight the Ports will be hoping for another win in this one.

St Gall’s having only lost one game in the present season, shared the points with the visiting Cargin last time and are still in contention at the top and will be expecting a win in this one.

A close one is certainly in prospect and a draw and a share of the spoils quite possible.

St Brigid’s v Lamh Dhearg

Having lost out to the visiting Casement’s last time at Hannahstown, Lamh Dhearg will be looking for a return to the positive this time as they travel to the Musgrave Park and a meeting with St Brigid’s.

They are still holding on to a place in the top six and will certainly look to retain such at the split and points are required.

St Brigid’s having returned to the top grade this term following a successful 2018 campaign have gained three wins to date but more are required as they look for consolidation.

Having gained a good win at Hightown last time with a 1-07 to 0-04 victory over St Enda’s, St Brigid’s may well return to their Musgrave abode in a positive mode as they welcome the Hannahstown men.

Another close one in prospect here, with just a tentative vote being awarded to the Lamh Dhearg men.

St John’s v Gort na Mona (6.00pm)

An evening affair here as the Johnnies play hosts to Gort na Mona at Corrigan Park.

Having been in good form this term Gearoid Adams charges remain very much in contention at the top of the table as they will seek to remain involved in the race for the league title.

Gort na Mona having returned to the top grade this term have gained three wins thus far but they will need further wins if they are to maintain status.

They failed to cope with the visiting Aghagallon last time however and this does look a more taxing assignment as they travel to the Whiterock road.

The Johnnies will start as firm favourites and although nothing can be taken for granted a home win does look likely.

Division Two (3.00pm)

Con Magees Glenravel v O’ Donovan Rossa

Having suffered relegation at the end of last term Rossa have most certainly signalled intention of a quick return to division 1 with results to date.

The Shaw’s road side are undefeated with eight wins from eight starts to date and will travel down to the South West in a most positive frame of mind as the meet up with Con Magees Glenravel.

The home having gained promotion last term following a most successful campaign in which they secured both league and championship and took a time to adjust to life in division 2 but have recorded four wins to date and will provide a stiff challenge for the visitors.

They had a good win at Lisburn last time and are in excellent form as they anticipate the visit of the pace setters.

The home side may well provide a test for their visitors but another win for Rossa in likely.

St Ergnat’s Moneyglass v St Mary’s Rasharkin

An all South West affair in this one as Rasharkin travel up to the very much in-form Moneyglass in what is traditionally a close affair.

The St Ergnat’s men are in excellent form at present with only a couple of defeats and they are very much in contention at the top of the table and currently in second place.

Rasharkin did earn a win over Moneyglass in the early season O’ Cahan Cup but the St Mary’s men have struggled to reach such heights in their league.

They did show improvement last time out with a fine 3-11 to 1-05 win over the visiting Davitt’s and may well travel in a more positive frame of mind.

Moneyglass will start as firm favourites and although the Dreen men are not to be underestimated a home win is anticipated.

Cuchullian’s Dunloy v Patrick Sarsfield’s

Dunloy have proved a trifle enigmatic in their offerings to date as the dual club continues to mix the good with the mediocre.

They most certainly were seen at their best last time as a 6-09 to 1-16 win at Aldergrove pays testament after a fifteen point beating inflicted by the visiting Glenavy previous to that one.

The Cuchullian’s will return to their home soil again this time and will look to maintain as previous as they play hosts to Sarsfield’s.

The Paddies with four wins to date are still in a top six spot and they will travel in search of consolidation.

They did enjoy a good win over Glenravel on their last trip to the South West and the Bear Pit residents will travel in search of similar return.

Another close one in prospect but ground advantage may well prove a factor and tipping the balance in favour of Dunloy.

All Saint’s Ballymena v Michael Davitt’s

All Saints have started the present season well and have gained five wins to date and the Quinn Park side remain up there in a top three spot in touch with the front runners as they play hosts to Davitt’s in this one.

The Ballymena men lost out to table topping Rossa last time but this may well be an easier assignment as they return to base in anticipation of the visit of the falls road side.

Davitt’s have struggled for concistancy and with only a couple of positive returns gained to date they do need points. A Sunday game will suit them however and they should field at something like full strength.

They did not fare at all well on their last visit to the South West and a twelve point defeat at Rasharkin and will travel looking for better this time.

All Saint’s will start this one as firm favourites and the current climate would strongly suggest a home win is likely but the Ballymena side would do well not to take the opposition lightly.

St Joseph’s Glenavy v St James Aldergrove

A local derby as keen rivals and near neighbours Glenavy and Aldergrove cross swords at the former’s Chapel Hill venue.

The home side have lengthened stride as the league progressed and will return to their Chapel Hill abode following back to back wins on the road.

They returned from Rasharkin with a victory last time to follow on from a similar return gained at Dunloy and seem to be running into a bit of form.

Aldergrove have struggled to gain a foothold to date with only four wins gained and conceded 6-09 to the visiting Dunloy last time and will hope for better as they travel to this derby date.

This looks like a close affair following in the tradition of such parish meetings but ground advantage may well aid a win for Glenavy.

Division Three

Eire Og v St Agnes

Little separates this duo in the ratings with only score difference separating the Aggies and Eire Og in the table.

This should be a close affair with the Andersonstown road based St Agnes given the nod.

St Comgall’s Antrim v St Malachy’s

St Comgall’s lead the way in division 3 and they may well consolidate such lofty position with another win over their visitors St Malachy’s.

Cardinal O’ Donnell’s v Kickham’s Ardoyne

Kickham’s Ardoyne still remain in close proximity to the pace setting St Comgall’s in the ratings and the North Belfast side should keep in touch with a win in this one when they visit McCrory Park based O’ Donnell’s.

Mc Quillan’s Ballycastle v Laochra Loch Lao

Mc Quillan’s have struggled this year, failing to gain a point to date but may well open account here as they welcome Laochra Loch Lao to their sea-side abode.
