Goal hungry Oisins shock Rossa to book semi-final place

Antrim Under 16 A Hurling Championship

Rossa 1-9 Oisins 7-15

Glenariffe Oisins enjoyed a goal fest in Belfast on Monday evening when they scored a runaway win over hitherto unbeaten Rossa to book their place in the next round of the U16 Hurling Championship.

Rossa, who were without their star midfielder Eoin Traynor, started brightly and got the first two points of the game from frees, and it looked like it could be a difficult evening for the boys from the Glens. However Glenariffe responded really well with a Niall McGarel point and then a Shea McDonnell goal in the 6th minute to go two clear. Rossa hit back with two more points from frees by Ruairi Murray in the 7th and 8th minute to level the game, but it was then all Glenariffe for the remainder of the first half as the Oisins scored 3-10 to Rossa’s 1-1 in a devestating 20 minutes, the goals coming from Patrick McIlwaine and Shea McDonnell, who finished the first half with 3 goals and 2 points.

Half time score was Oisin 4-11 and Rossa 1-5 (0-4 from frees).

Again Rossa started the second half well getting the first two scores from play, but any thoughts of a Rossa comeback were put to bed in the 38th minute when Patrick McIlwaine got in for his second goal of the match. Glenariffe finished the match strongly with further goals Seanie McIntosh and Oran Gillan, and points through Shea McDonnell, Dan Kearney, Seanie McIntosh and Orrin O”Connor. Glenariffe now have a home draw against the winners of Dunloy and Ballycastle in the semi final next week.
