Antrim Senior Camogie Championship
Cushendall 1-17 Portglenone 2-10
Following a scoring blitz from Orlagh O’Hara at the end of the first half last year’s beaten finalists Cushendall looked to be home and hosed against Portglenone with a 1-11 to 1-3 lead.
However the Geraldine’s turned in an excellent second half and gave the home side a run for their money before O’Hara popped over the last two points of the game to seal victory for her team.
Portglenone had held their own fairly well over the first 20 minutes as well and led 1-3 to 0-5 with a solo goal and three points from Katie McAleese.
Cushendall however looked to be moving better as a team in that early part of the game with O’Hara a huge threat on the edge of the square and Siobhan McKillop prominent at midfield.
Katie McAleese carried the same threat as O’Hara at the other end with goalie Patricia McCarry, Una and Niamh Doherty and Eimear McKee others to step up to the mark for Portglenone particularly during the second half.
O’Hara blasted home from the 10 metres in the 21st minute and added five points before the short whistle to put her side with an eight points’ lead at the turnover.
However Louise Crozier fired home a goal 25 seconds into the second half and with Katie McAleese accurate on frees and sub Siobhan Doherty grabbing a couple of points the gap between the sides gradually closed down to two points, 2-8 to 1-13, over the opening 20 minutes of the second half.
With McAleese still converting frees they remained in touch until O’Hara finished them off with three late points to bring her personal tally for the night to 1-11.
Champions Loughgiel enter the fray next week against Portglenone, and it would be a huge surprise if the win tonight is not good enough to see Cushendall through to a semi-final, regardless of the result of the following week’s match with Loughgiel.
