St Joseph’s Under 16 Gaelic Footballers enjoyed a very successful season in 2019 finishing with three pieces of silverware and narrowly missing out on a fourth as they were winners of Section 2B of the U16 County Antrim Football League, winners of the Division 2 All County League Final, winners of the South West Antrim Championship Breslin Shield and finished as runners up in the U16 Antrim Football Championship narrowly defeated in the final. This season, the Glenavy U16 football team have also welcomed 5 members of our neighboring club in the Council St Patrick’s GAC, Lisburn onto the team as they did not have an U16 team this year. This link between the two clubs has been extremely successful as the team were defeated only twice in the entire season. This team have also benefitted from a cross-community initiative between Glenavy GAC and Lisburn Rugby Club several years ago where both clubs forged a link with players for each participating for the other club. Two of the current starting 15 on St Joseph’s U16 team joined the club as a result of this initiative several years ago and have continued to play. This team comprises of a panel of 24 extremely dedicated players who have been training and competing since last December (2018) until the culmination of the season on Friday 4th October 2019, winning the All County League Final. Having played over 30 games this season, the team were victorious 28 times and lost only twice – a very impressive record. The team have shown a consistently exceptional level of skill on the field having defeating teams from all across Ulster at various stages throughout the year as well as having an exemplary disciplinary record throughout the season with not one player receiving a red card in any game. The team are coached by 4 mentors who have developed the group as players throughout the year and also shown a high level of commitment and dedication. This U16 team were worthy winners of the Junior Team of the Year award as they have been a credit to the club throughout the entire season and this has been coupled with a high level of success.
