Patrick Sarsfield’s 0-06 St Ergnat’s Moneyglass 0-13
Moneyglass opened their account with a win when they defied the efforts of a strong Sarsfield’s side at the Bear pit on Sunday.
The Marian Hill side saw Lady Luck turn her back on them last term in championship and league fare but they will strive to make amends this term and on this opening effort they fully underlined credentials.
Sarsfield’s are always strong contenders in this grade and they started this one on a positive note making the opening mark as Kevin Mc Kernan had the ball over the bar just a minute into proceedings.
The visitors did draw abreast via the pace laden Conal Prenter who came in front of his marker to fire over and another from Colum Duffin saw the St Ergnat’s men take the lead.
Sarsfield’s drew level again with a fine Gary Lennon effort but after Conor Boyd despatched between the posts to see Moneyglass back in front the Paddies were to receive a blow to morale when they were forced into change when young Kevin Floyd was forced out of the game with a bad leg injury.
A Pat McCormick point initiated by a cute Sean Kelly delivery saw Moneyglass gain the lead again and although Caolan Mc Kernan replied in kind,, late scores from Conor Boyd, Seanachain Duffin (2), and Conor O’ Kane saw them earn a 0-08 to 0-03 interval advantage.
The Paddies stared the second half with a couple of early scores and although they did add another couple via Gary Lennon to a single Colum Duffin effort that was to complete their total.
Moneyglass still maintained advantage at the start of the last quarter and after Jervis Weir placed Patrick Mc Cormick in for a point the South West side finished with a flourish with Antrim mid fielder Colum Duffin in the vanguard.
Duffin raised a further three white flags in the latter stages to see his side ease over the winning line with the points on board at 0-13 t0 0-06.
A fine win for St Ergnat’s to initiate what may well prove a rewarding season with James Mc Meel, Sean Kelly, Conor Boyd, Jack Mc Coy, and the Duffin brothers, Seanachan and Colum leading the charge.
The Paddies may well prove contenders with Declan Laverty, John Savage, Caolan Mc Kernan, Kevin Mc Kernan and Gary Lennon prominent in this one.
