Creagh Concrete Minor Football B2

St. Mary’s Rasharkin 1-2 Kickham’s Creggan 4-17

An excellent Kickham’s Creggan proved much too slick for a battling but outclassed St. Mary’s Rasharkin in this opening Minor Football B2 clash at Dreen today. The home side fielded quite a number of U16’s in their side and while Sean McTaggart and Liam Hardy’s side gave it everything, they were overpowered by the visitors in the end.

Creggan opened strongly and led by three points after eight minutes with Lee Johnston, Sean Duffin and Johnston again on target. A mix of poor shooting by the visitors and some stubborn home defending by the home side saw the scores dry up for a time but when Joe McAteer added a fourth point in the 18th minute the scores began to flow.

Oisin McAteer, Joe McAteer 0-3 and Fintan O’Neill extended the visitors lead to 0-9 as the water break momentarily brought proceedings to a halt and on the restart the visitors were unable to extend their lead with Oisin Johnston in goals, Darach Duffin, Ethan McMullan and Cathal Darragh denying them with some strong defending.

On the restart Rasharkin got off to a good start and Oisin Casey split the uprights but Creggan made immediate response and a hat trick of points by the superb Sean Duffin saw them move 11 clear by the 6th minute.

Duffin had now moved from mid-field to a more attacking role as the Kickhams continued to carry the game to their opponents and Lee Johnston got in for a goal from close range in the 7th minute to put the game out of Rasharkin’s reach.

Sean Duffin continued to threaten as he pointed a free and the home side could have been forgiven for throwing in the towel but they quite simply refused to quit and were finally rewarded for their endeavour.

Ruairi O’Boyle, who had battled hard throughout at mid-field went on a mazey 40 meter solo run, breaking a number of challenges before firing low to the net and gain some reward for his efforts in the engine room.

It failed to lift his side however as Creggan came back strongly as Sean Duffin, Odhran Hampsey, Fintan O’Neill and Lee Johnston replied with points and when Johnston followed with his second goal in the 20th minute it was done and dusted.

Sean Duffin added another before Johnston completed his hat-trick with two minutes of normal time remaining with Oran McMullan replying with a consolation point for the Dreen side.

Creggan look impressive on this showing with their half-back line of Odhran Hampsey, Dylan Hinfey and Sean McAuley always ready to push forward in support of their attack while Sean Duffin at mid-field and later in attack was outstanding. Lee Johnston and Joe McAteer were others to impress in a strong Kickham’s side.

Despite the margin of defeat Rasharkin deserve credit for never giving up and in Oisin Johnston in goals, Darach Duffin, Ethan McMullan, Cathal Darragh, Cathal Montgomery, Oran McMullan, Ruairi O’Boyle, Oisin Casey and Ruairi Duffin they had strong performers.
