St Brigid’s 5-9 Rossa 1-7
St Brigid’s turned in a top class display at Musgrave Park on Thursday evening to beat a fancied Rossa team by fourteen points in the second round robin round of the Minor Football Championship. Rossa had drawn their opening game against Sarsfield’s and knew they needed to get a result in this one to keep their title hopes alive, and when they flew out of the traps with a point from Eoin May and a goal from Barra McCaffrey things looked promising. However by the time they raised their next flag twenty three minutes later the game was gone from their grasp as St Brigid’s hit them with a scoring barrage that yielded an incredible 4-5 without reply.
St Brigid’s took a while to settle after Rossa’s good start but when Marcus Lynch opened their account in the eighth minute the scores began to flow. Lynch added a goal a minute later, from a penalty and after two more points from the centre forward Ronan Boyle got in on the act with a well taken point. Three goals in a row from Oisin McDonnell, Fiontann McGarvey and Toirealach Brolly all but ended the contest and though Rossa hit the last two points of the opening half they were still 4-5 to 1-3 behind at the break.
When the Shaw’s Road side hit the first three points of the second half through Daire Murphy (0- 2) and Barra McCaffrey there was renewed hope, but even though it took St Brigid’s 16 minutes to open their second half account, a Marcus Lynch point settled his side.
When Lynch grabbed his team’s fifth goal two minutes later it was all over, and though they only managed two more points for the rest of the game the damage was done and they now look certain to qualify from the group with full points from their first two games.
