Creagh Concrete Minor Football Championship

Sarsfields 2-4 St Gall 0-9

Goals in each half by Paul Gorman and Daniel Mullan were the vital scores that helped Sarsfields over the line in an excellent Minor Football Championship round robin game at the Bear Pit on Thursday evening. Gorman’s goal came twelve minutes into the opening half at a time they trailed the visitors by two points and the other in the opening minute of the second half with the sides level the scoreboard, giving the home side back they lead they would not relinquish to the final whistle.

A tremendous save from St Gall’s keeper Louis McCormick denied Sarsfields Paul Gorman what looked a certain goal in the early minutes, but the Milltown boys survived an early barrage before taking the lead with a well taken point by Odhran McDonald. There was goalkeeping heroics at the other end in the eighth minute when the Paddies netminder Jonathan Rodgers make a fantastic stop himself to somehow deflect a fantastic shot by St Gall’s full forward Dubhaltach Wilson out for a 45, but his opposite number McCormick came up to stroke the resultant award straight hand high between the Sarsfields posts to give his team a two point lead.

Paul Gorman eventually got the Paddies on the scoreboard when he cut in along the endline to drill the ball low to the St Gall’s net and it was nip and tuck from then until half time when the teams were tied on 1-2 to 0-5

Sarsfields second goal came inside the first minute of the new half when Conal Duffy cut down the left wing and sent a pass across to the far post when corner forward Daniel Mullan palmed it into the net. A point from a free from out near the sideline by midfielder Micael Ferris put the Paddies four clear and though St Gall’s got it back to a point with two excellent points from Wilson, and another from a free by goalkeeper McCormick Sarsfields held on for the win. In the final minute they had a chance to make it secure when they were awarded a penalty, but Duffy’s low shot just shaved the outside of the post.
