First win for St. Mary’s Aghagallon

Senior Reserve Football Cup

Group 1

Aghagallon 5-13 St. Enda’s 0-9

Both teams took the field tonight looking for their first points in the Senior Reserve Cup Group 1. Naomh Eanna had the best of the opening spell but could not turn their possession into scores and only returned one point through Conall Scott. Anselm Henry got the host’s first two scores but Scott pulled thesides level again.

A poor clearance by Naomh Eanna was punished when Conleth Mc Alinden collected it and one on one with the keeper finished well to score the first of his three goals on the night. Adam Shanks extended the lead but the Hightown men replied through Declan Maclelen and Sean Mc Bride.

Full back Christopher Mc Grath surged forward to score a great point, starting the move in his own half and continuing his run and when he received the return pass in shooting range he kept his composure

to split the posts. Mc Bride got another for the visitors but Ruairi Loughran opened his account with two points before half time

Half Time St Mary’s 1:6, Naomh Eanna 0:05

With only two scores in it at this stage the game was still in the balance but St Mary’s got out of the blocks better in the second half, Steven Branagan played a perfect pass to Anselm Henry who converted, Kieran Magee got his name on the score sheet and then linked well with the overlapping Kieran Hamill who found Daniel Hannon who held the ball up before finding Conleth Mc Alinden who tapped in goal number two.

Ruairi Loughran got another point but the game was secured when Anselm Henry’s shot appeared to be going for a point but dipped into that sweet spot just under the cross bar giving the goalkeeper no chance. Adam Shanks got his second point of the night.

Sean Mc Bride and Michael Kennedy pulled back a point a piece but the momentum swung back to the home team, Ruairi Loughran scored a goal before Callum Fitzpatrick and Anselm Henry knocked over frees from either side of the pitch. Conleth Mc Alinden took the ball around the goal keeper to score his third goal. Declan Maclelen finished the scoring for the night, collecting the ball on the right-hand side before turning and shooting in one movement for a well taken point.

Both sides are out again on Friday night in the final matches of the first half of the fixtures.
