Under 16 A Football League
Sarsfields 1-6 St Brigid’s 0-4
Sarsfields under 16 footballers shocked St Brigids in the Under 16 football championship at the Bear Pit on Tuesday evening. The South Belfast side dominated the opening 10 minutes and scored 3 points on the bounce with their full forward pointing after claiming the mark and 2 close in frees.
Whatever Paddies manager Ciarán o Dochartaigh said to his side at the water break certainly worked as they totally dominated the second quarter. Pearse Murray ran the length of the Park to point and Brian Healy pointed a free after Daire Mc Menamin was fouled., Shea Ferris was dragged down as he burst clear to score and Healy pointed the free to leave the sides level 0.3 to 0.3 at half time.
The Paddies workrate was phenomenal and their tackling disciplined in the second half as they kept St Brigid’s scoreless in the third quarter, Keelan Gorman pointed to give Sarsfields a narrow lead going into the final quarter.
St Brigids equalised before Oisin Coleman hit a beautiful long range point , Healy added a point and with five minutes to go , Shea Ferris scored to give the Paddies a surprise five point win. Their success was based on a solid defensive performance by Anthony Mc Garrigle, Calem Donnelly, Ahmed Soda, Steven Hughes , Darragh Coleman and Daire Mc Menamin who was everywhere.
The match was superbly referred by Pat Hughes who let play flow from end to end and rarely had to stop the play or talk to players.
