Camogie Division 3
Armoy 6-05 Rasharkin 5-07
For the second game in succession, St. Mary’s Rasharkin suffered bitter disappointment going down by the minimum to Glen Rovers in Armoy last night. In a thrilling battle from first to last on a windswept evening, the wind blowing across the pitch didn’t help either team but despite the conditions both sides served up an entertaining game of Camogie which was in doubt until the final whistle.
It was visitors St. Mary’s who opened brightly with Jade Henry 0-2 and Kate McFerran pointing them 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after 12 minutes and when Kate got in for a goal in the 15th minute it was looking good for the visitors.
The home side took a time to settle but gradually they began to play their way into the game, hitting the next three points to draw level by the water break and on the restart Armoy began to get on top.
Four goals and a point without reply saw the girls from the Glen dominate the second quarter and they looked like running away with it at that stage but Kate McFerran finally got Rasharkin going again from a free and a late Jade Henry goal handed ther visitors a lifeline as the half-time whistle sounded.
HT Armoy 4-5 Rasharkin 2-4
Rasharkin pushed hard to reduce the deficit early in second half, scoring 1-01 in the space of five minutes with the goal coming from Amy McMullan who drilled a 20 meter free to the Armoy net to give her side a massive lift. Kate McFerran added a point and there was just a goal between the sides but Armoy came storming back with a sixth minute goal and it was obvious we were in for an exciting second half.
The Dreen girls continued to push forward and with Kate McFerran and Amy McMullan keeping the scoreboard ticking and at the second water break there was just two between the sides in favour of the Glen Rovers with all to play for in the final quarter.
An Amy McMullan pointed free reduced the gap to one on the restart and it certainly looked anyone’s game at this stage but, as they had done throughout the home side were able to respond with a goal.
Now four in arrears the momentum looked to have swung in favour of the Blue & Whites but Rasharkin refused to throw in the towel and were rewarded when Bronagh Hasson pulled on a lose sliotar to finish to the net with five minutes remaining.
Rasharkin pushed hard for an equaliser, but the Armoy defence stood strong to see out the game.
A great game as a spectacle, even with the weather conditions and with championship next week, Thursday 27th August, it was a great warmup for both sides.
Armoy are away to Gortnamona next Thursday & Rasharkin are at home to St John’s, with the 2 winners meeting in the semi-finals the following week, Thursday 3rd September.
