Late Morris goal earns Rossa a share of the spoils

Senior Reserve Cup (round 7)

Erin’s Own Cargin 2-10 O’ Donovan Rossa 2-10

A late strike in injury time by wing half back Luke Morris ensured Rossa earned a share of the spoils and remain in the hunt for a place in the semi-finals of the reserve Cup competition following an entertaining encounter with Cargin at Toome on Wednesday evening.

A top drawer finish from the defender launched with venom from the 20 metre line found the corner of the net and denied the home side the win.

Little separated the sides in the opening period but a Sean Mc Auley 10th minute goal after he pounced on the rebound of Peadar McKeever’s net bound attempt which rebounded of an upright.

Kieran Close had ensured the home side an early advantage when he raised a couple of early white flags but the Shaw’s road side were on terms by the 8th minute after Adam Devlin despatched a 40 metre free between the posts and corner man Darragh Murphy added another before Mc Auley found the net.

Cargin reached the first water break a goal to the good after Kieran Close was forced out of the game early with a groin injury and another injury to Ryan Mc Kiernan forced early change.

The visitors who were wayward in some of their finishing in the early found the range in the second quarter with Corman Mc Gettigan, Darragh Murphy and Conor O’ Neill before Ronan Devlin and Peadar Mc Keever replied at the other end to leave Cargin 1-05 to 0-06 ahead at the break.

An early Conor O’ Neill point from distance saw Rossa away in the second half but Michael Clarke announced his arrival with a 35th minute point with John Mc Nabb coming wide on the right hand side to add another.

Cargin enjoyed a three point advantage at this Rossa responded and the impressive Adam Devlin raced through the middle to deliver a stunning 41st minute goal to bring his side level.

Cargin were quick to reply with late replacement Michael Clarke causing problems for the Rossa defence and points from John Mc Nabb and Gavin Pollock and another from Clarke saw the home side move three clear once more.

A 45th minute Michael Mc Greevey reply reduced the home side’s advantage to two, 1-10 to 1-08 at the second water break.

Cargin began the last quarter on the positive and Peadar Mc Keever fired over an early point before Michael Clarke raced through the Rossa defence to grab a 55th minute goal and the Toome men looked on their way to victory.

Rossa were having none of it however and after Michael Clarke added a 60th minute point the visitors finished strongly and a late Luke Morris goal ensured Rossa had earned a share of the spoils.
