Intermediate Camogie semis on Friday and Saturday

Antrim Intermediate championship semi-finals

Friday 4th Sept 6.45pm in Portglenone

Tír na nÓg v Dunloy

Saturday 5th 6.30pm in Randalstown

Rossa v Brídíní Óga Glenravel

FOR the past three seasons the Antrim Intermediate final has been contested by Loughgiel and Brídíní Óga with the Shamrocks completing a famous three-in-a-row.

Last week next door neighbours Dunloy ended the Shamrocks’ reign with Orla O’Neill hitting 1-8 including the last four points in a 2-9 to 2-6 victory. The Glenravel side still remains in contention and face Rossa in the second semi-final on Saturday evening in Randalstown.

On Friday however Dunloy will try to build on the Loughgiel win when they play Tír na nÓg, the only unbeaten team in the Division this season.

The Randalstown girls had a comprehensive victory in Ballycastle last week with Brónagh Devlin a commanding presence as a sweeping corner back while her twin sister Áine nailed six points in a 2-17 to 0-4 win.

The return of former county star Michaela Heggarty to full-forward has been a boost this year, her experience bringing the best out of exciting young players like Niamh Martin, Emma McAreavey, Emily Falloon and the McCaughey sisters.

Dunloy made it through the quarter-final mainly due to the accuracy of O’Neill, but they too have youngsters with a bright future like the Magill twins, Sarah McIlahatton, Kyra Doherty and goalie Kirsty McFerran.

The second semi-final promises a keenly contested game with a much changed Glenravel side taking on Rossa who dropped down from the senior championship last year.

When they met in the opening game of the league, Rossa had a resounding 2-14 to 3-2 victory, but Brídíní Óga overturned that in Glenravel to win by 5-8 to 2-7, sealing it with two late goals from Victoria Edgar.

Edgar is one of just nine survivors from last year’s final defeat to Loughgiel with a number of changes forced on the north Antrim side. Nevertheless they easily took out Ahoghill last week in the quarter-final and again on Tuesday night in a league game that puts them into a league final with Tír na nÓg.

Laoise McKenna and Ellen Hynds have been in recent Antrim senior panels while more players have been coming through in underage county teams.

By contrast Rossa still have a core of players who collected senior titles in the early years of the last decade and six, Natalie McGuinness, Mairin Quinn, Brona Orchin, Colleen Doherty, Orla McCall and Mariosa McGourty, played in the club’s greatest ever day out 12 years ago when they won the All-Ireland senior club title.

That experience could be crucial in a tight knock-out game that should go to the wire.

Tír na nÓg and Brídíní Óga could well make it into next week’s championship decider as well as the league final, but Rossa look to be the biggest threat to that pairing evolving over the next couple of evenings.
