Lámh’s shade bad tempered batle in the Ahoghill heat

Ahoghill 0-11-1-12 Lámh Dhearg

Kevin Herron reports from Ahoghill

Lámh Dhearg secured back-to-back league victories and condemned Ahoghill to a third straight league defeat after coming out on top 1-12-0-11 on the Crosskeys Road on Sunday.

The sides weren’t to be separated at the break after a game of two quarters that saw the visitors come out of the traps quickest and Ahoghill finish stronger.

Ahoghill started the second half on the front foot, but Terry McCrudden would steer home the game’s only goal to give his side the edge of the remainder of the contest that boiled over at times and saw it finish 13 v 12 at the conclusion.

Terry McCrudden converted an early free to give his side the advantage and would double tally from the same scenario after Fionn Mervyn was felled.

McCrudden conjured up his first from play in the afternoon after good work between Declan Straney and Declan Smyth who guided the ball into his path.

Declan Smith then saw his run checked and McCrudden converted his third free of the half to make it 0-04-0-00.

It took Ahoghill until the 15th minute to eventually respond through James O’Connell’s high shot that dropped over the bar.

O’Connell would land a free for the hosts after the water break, but McCrudden would land his sides fifth score of the half.

Daire Larkin fed Declan Smith and he popped the ball inside to Declan Straney who slipped in McCrudden for his second from play. A second free from O’Connell would make it a two-point game once again.

Both sides had goal opportunities in the aftermath, Francis Neeson came long to kick a 45’ which dropped, and Eoin Graham thumped it goal wards- a scramble ensued but referee Jarlath O’Donnell was unconvinced that the ball had crossed the line.

Lámh Dhearg missed two gilt-edged chances of their own to extend their lead when McCrudden found the run of Declan Smith who claimed the mark and then advanced and lobbed the ball over Francis Neeson, but Bernard Graham was waiting to clear it on the line.

Another chance would go abegging when Michael Herron sent a looping ball into the square and Smith held off the pressure and was able to get a shot in on goal, but it crashed off the crossbar and out to safety.

Bernard Graham turned defence to attack and broke from deep to combine with James O’Connell for the corner-forwards fourth point of the afternoon.

Ahoghill would finish the half with a man’s advantage as Ryan Diamond was shown a black card for a foul and in a double whammy O’Connell converted to level at 0-05 a piece.

The half would end on a sour note with a coming together between players from both sides – which resulted in Declan Smyth and Conor Paul Crossey receiving their marching orders for their respective sides at the break.

Ahoghill made use of their numerical advantage early in the second period, taking the lead with a terrific turn and point from Donal Graham and extending it through attacking corner back Eamonn Brady.

Declan Smith halved the deficit after converting a placed ball from the ground and then the visitors regained the lead through a stroke of good fortune.

Substitute Francis Dugan took a pass from Declan Straney and set off towards goal, his shot was blocked by Francis Neeson and the ball bobbled with Terry McCrudden trying to fire the loose ball home his shot bounced off Ahoghill defender Patrick Dougan and was deflected into the net to give his side a 1-06-0-07 lead.

They then got the next two scores, Pearse Fitzsimons passed inside to McCrudden who had a sighting of goal- though his effort was deflected and lopped over the crossbar. The Lámhs talisman would conjure his next point thanks in no part from a slick pass by Declan Smith.

A further goal may have been in the offing for the Hannashtown men from a high shot from Smith than hung in the air and wasn’t dealt with, Pearse Fitzsimons attempted to fist it across the face of goal but there was nobody there to turn the loose ball to the net.

James O’Connell would convert his fourth point of the afternoon as Ahoghill sought a route back into proceedings and before the water break in the second half James Magee slotted one straight between the large posts to leave the game delicately balanced at 1-08-0-09.

Substitute Cormac Hannan would make an immediate impact with a smart point after linking up with Francie Dugan. James O’Connell hit back with a splendid score at the other end, however.

O’Connell landed his fifth free of the afternoon to bring it down to a single point, though Cormac Hannan landed a sensational point in response.

Terry McCrudden landed his fourth free of the afternoon to ensure the hosts would need a goal to salvage a share of the spoils.

But tempers frayed again towards the end with referee Jarlath O’Donnell dismissing Ahoghill’s Eamonn Brady along with Cormac Hannan and Declan Straney.

Lámh Dhearg’s insurance score arrived courtesy of Terry McCrudden who notched up his fifth free and ninth point in all to ensure his side headed back home with the two-points secured.

Rossa enjoying life in the fast lane

Homefit Antrim Football League Division One

O’Donovan Rossa 1-11 Erin’s Own, Cargin 0-12

Rossa continued life in the fast lane as they overcame the challenge of county champions Cargin in an exciting encounter on the Shaw’s Road yesterday. Hugh McGettigan’s side have shown marked improvement under his guidance this year and they now look serious challengers for honours.

It took two well struck Colm Fleming frees late in the game to secure victory however and the big man kept his cool to get his side over the line with a draw looking the likely outcome.

The hosts were full value for their win however as they defended well throughout, held their own at mid-field and were able to take their opportunities when they arrived.

Botyh sides started with a number of regulars missing and it gave an opportunity to the younger members of both squads to show what they could do and there was much on show to please both management teams.

I t was one of Rossa’s more experienced member, Colm Fleming’s who provided the vital scores however and his goal from a 12th minute penalty that proved crucial in the end. Both sides entered this game unbeaten with the Rossa win certainly a huge boost to their morale as they moved to the top of Division One.

Cargin, were first off the mark as Kieran Close pointed a second minute free after John Carron had been fouled, but the hosts were level immediately as Cormac McGettigan bust through to fist over.

A pair of Colm Fleming frees put Rossa ahead again and things got even better after 12 minutes when the home side were awarded a penalty after Padraic McLaughlin was adjudged to have  fouled McGettigan and Fleming stepped-up to finish confidently to make it 1-3 to 0-1.

Close responded with a free at the other end but Rossa were flying and Thomas Morgan burst through on the left with his rasping shot just clearing the bar before Cargin got their first from play just before the water break as Kevin McShane pointed.

Close and Morgan traded frees after the resumption as Cargin began to get into their stride and finished the half strongly, hitting the last three points of the half through Sean Og Quinn with Ronan Kelly adding two more.

Rossa goalkeeper Conal McDonald then denied Mark Kelly before Rossa had a second appeal for a penalty waved aside when Thomas Morgan appeared to be fouled as he broke through in stoppage time, but the hosts went in at the break holding a 1-5 to 0-7 advantage.

Cargin came out flying at the start of the second half the second half, but were finding a well organised Rossa defence hard to break down and they broke with great effect to punish the visitors as Dominic McEnhill collected a good ball inside to turn and score.

Erin’s Own started to get it together at this stage as Gerard McCorley finished a good move and Mark Kelly then hit the equaliser and it looked at this stage that the contest was beginning to swing in favour of the visitors.

Cargin then hit the front as they forced a turnover and Paul McCann fired over, but Rossa responded as Niall Crossan guided a shot over before a Close free restored the Cargin advantage once more.

Again, the hosts replied with McEnhill finding Colm Fleming who curled over a great point to leave the sides level at 1-8 to 0-11 at the second half water break and all to play for.

Rossa had the bit firmly between their teeth as the final session got under way as McEnhill put them back in front before Paul McCann tied the game once again when he raced clear before cutting back onto his right to curl over as beauty but the visitors spurned a couple of chances to go ahead.

They were made to pay as Rossa countered and won a free that Fleming nailed from distance and he added another deep in stoppage time to seal it for the Shaw’s Road outfit.

ROSSA: C McDonald; P Moyes, C McGuinness, C Orchin; R Gowdy, G McGrath, N Crossan (0-1); C McGettigan (0-1), C Fleming (1-5, 0-4 frees, 1-0 penalty); T Morgan (0-2, 1 free), D McEnhill (0-2), M Mallon; A Devlin, D Armstrong, R Currie. Great win for Antrim Division 4 camogs

Littlewoods Division Four League

Wicklow 1-17 Antrim 5-8

Antrim travelled to Arklow for their final Division Four League game against Wicklow and manager Gavin Curran took the opportunity to try out positional and personnel changes from the teams that fielded against Tyrone and Cavan.

Antrim started stronger with three unanswered scores before Wicklow took advantage of a defensive mistake for Kasey Byrne to nip in for a goal.

Antrim’s new midfield pairing of Enya McShane & Caitlin Heggarty then took over and Wicklow counteracted by dropping back a sweeper.

In defence Siantelle Boyd put in a very strong performance in a first start for the Saffrons, while Fionnghuala Rocks recovered from a shaky start to lead by example, with Orla Donnelly faultless for the goal and in control from then on. Rebecca Stewart also worked hard at corner back.

Up front Orlagh O’Neill’s direct running drew the sweeper out of position, allowing corner forward Fionnuala Kelly to do damage on the score-board.

Antrim led at half-time by 2-7 to 1-8 with goals from Riana McBride and Fionnuala Kelly. Kelly, whose older sister Maeve hit four points in the Division Two win over Derry, bagged a second half goal as well as two points. Orlagh Laverty scored the third goal at the start of the second half, but it was the last goal from Eimear Byrne that made the real difference and gave this team their first victory.

Gavin Curran and his management team and some of the players in high spirits after Saturday’s win

They now look forward to the Premier Junior championship in late July, with seven weeks’ of hard work needed to compete at this level.

Antrim scorers : Fionnuala Kelly 2-2, Orlagh Laverty 1-2, Eimear Byrne 1-1, Riana McBride 1-1, Orlagh O’Neill 0-3.

ACFL Division 3

Rasharkin 1-14 Loachra Loch Loa 0-06

Rasharkin continued their unbeaten start to life in division 3 with an eleven point win over Loachra Loch Lao but were made to work hard by the visitors who were well organised and competitive throughout.

The game had a slow start as Loachra Loch Loa started with a very defensive setup and while Rasharkin had lots of possession they were finding it tough to break through a well organised visitor’s defence.

It took until the 6th minute before Ryan Lynch opened the scoring with a point but there was then a long delay as Lynch had to leave the field with an injury.

A second point from Colm Kennedy left the score at 2 points to no score at the first water break.

Rasharkin were much improved after the break and were more incisive in attack resulting in 2 pointed frees from Shane Hasson and a further score from Oran McMullan.  Rasharkin were now in command and added further points from Hasson and two from full forward Eamonn McNeill.  The decisive score of the game then came from new addition Seamus Ellis as the Glenties native cut through and fired to the net after a great run.  Half time score Rasharkin 1-08 Loachra Loch Lao 0-02.

Loachra started the second half impressively as they came out of their defensive shell and were winning primary possession around the middle third.  They reeled off the next 3 scores and were challenging hard all over the pitch.  Rasharkin midfielder Thomas McMullan was sent off for a second yellow card in the 40th minute but Loachra Loch Lao were unable to sustain the challenge as Rasharkin turned the tide and added scores from Killian O’Boyle, Seamus Ellis and 2 pointed frees from Shane Hasson.

Loachra Loch Lao tagged on another score but Rasharkin were never troubled and comfortably saw out the game with a super long range free from Tiernan O’Boyle.
