Rasharkin off to a bright start

ACFL Div.3

 Rasharkin 4-13 St Malachys 0-11

St. Mary’s Rasharkin got their division 3 ACFL off to a good start when they entertained St. Malachy’s at Dreen today. The home side started very brightly and dominated the first 5 minutes with points from play from Tiernan O’Boyle, Eamonn McNeill and Ryan Lynch.

St Malachys were struggling to get out of their half and were punished by a well struck goal from Ruairi O’Boyle following some nice interplay from Odhran McGarrell.

St Malachy’s got off the mark with a pointed free from Karl McCavana but Rasharkin immediately responded with a free from Shane Hasson and a long range point from play from Ruairi O’Boyle.

Midfielder Anthony Dobbin broke forward for a good score to give St Malachy’s their first point from play before Rasharkin tagged on two further frees from centre half forward Ryan Lynch.

At the first half water break Rasharkin were ahead 1-7 to 0-2 and could have been further ahead if not for some great saves by Conan Russell in the St Malachys goals.

St Malachy’s found their feet after the water break and were securing more possession in the middle third and scored a good point from Jack McGivern.

Rasharkin responded with a 45 from Tiernan O’Boyle before Eamonn McNeill found his way past Russell for a well taken goal.

St Malachy’s then had a purple patch and hit three pointed frees on the bounce from the boot of Karl McCavana.

Their revival was short lived as the lively Odhran McGarrell found space and blasted to the St Malachy’s net to leave the score Rasharkin 3-08 to 0-06 at the break.

St Malachys started the second half well and hit the first two points before the impressive Eamonn McNeill pointed then blasted to the net for his second goal.

Colm Kennedy broke forward for a point from play to leave 14 between the sides at the second half water break.

St Malachys battled hard right to the final whistle as the teams exchanged points in the final quarter with Rasharkin substitute Oran McMullan hitting 2 points on his senior debut.
