Good start sets Ballycastle up for the win

Antrim Camogie League Division 1

Mc Quillan’s 1-19 Geraldine’s Portglenone 1.07

The first 15 minutes of this game between Ballycastle and Portglenone was just one way traffic with the home side getting off to a magnificent 1.11 to 0.0 start. Maeve Kelly opened the scoring with two finely taken points having been ably supplied with possession by her younger sister Fionnuala out on the wing. Aine Donnelly then slotted over a third having gained possession from big sister Niamh,  before Kelly hit 1.04, pucking over 2 frees from tight angles. Emma Connor struck a long range point before Maeve added to her tally and Riana McBride sending over 2 frees which she had won with her direct running. However, after the water break Portglenone organised their defence with Roisin Kelly, Maria McLarnon and Nuala Kelly all showing leadership and delivering the ball out of the danger area. Ballycastle added 3 more points from Caoimhe Wright, Aine Donnelly and Emma Connor before Ciara Duffin pointed soon followed by a converted free for Shannon Darragh. Jane McAleese finished a fine passage of play with a well taken goal just before half time to leave the home side in front 1.14 to 1.02.

Niamh Donnelly started the scoring in the second half with a point which was immediately answered at the other end with Shannon Darragh sending over a point from a free. Caoimhe Wright also added to her tally sending over a free just before the water break. Eimear McKee worked brilliantly  in midfield for Portglenone and her energy helped motivate her team to try to pull back the deficit.  Portglenone continued to battle in the last 15 minutes and were rewarded with 2 a piece for Ciara Duffin and Shannon Darragh, whilst Ballycastle finished their scoring with another Wright point and 2 more for Maria Bakewell to end the game with a 1.19 to 1.07 scoreline for the home team. Both teams showed well over the 60 minutes with solid performances for both sets of management to build on.

Con Magees win opener at Davitt’s

Antrim Football League Division 2

Davitts 0-3, Glenravel 2-9

There was a slow start to this game at Davitt Park on Sunday as both teams were guilty of missing scoreable opportunities in the  first quarter. Glenravel settled better with a point followed by a fine move ending with Sean McKay rattling the ball to the net. In a purple patch half way through the half Davitts added 2 points but should have had more whilst Glenravel’s persistent play throughout the half saw them go in at half time leading 1-5 to 0-2.

The second half saw Glenravel pull away as Davitts were guilty of some poor finishing. An excellent move through the centre of the Davitt’s defence saw Declan Traynor lob the ball over the keepers’ head to the net to seal the win for Glenravel and the game petered out to a final score of 2-9 to 0-3.

Loughgiel Camogs start their Senior League with a decisive victory

Antrim Camogie League – Division 1

Loughgiel 2-23 Cushendall 0-6

After an evening that was covered by the blanket of a malevolent grey cloud, Fr Healy Park was once more inviting Loughgiel’s Senior Camogie team to meet the jerseys of Cushendall’s Ruairí Óg.

Champions Loughgiel were in command throughout and led by 1-13 to 0-4 at the break. They pushed on in the second half, adding a further 1-10 to their tally, while restricting the visitors to just two points.

Rachquel Murphy got the home side off the mark after a good passing move by the Shamrocks forwards and Lucia McNaughton put them two clear soon afterwards. The visitors were struggling to contain the rampant champions and when Christine Laverty got through to smash the ball to the Ruairi Og net they went on to lead by 1-6 to 0-1 at the first water-break.

Hero of Antrim’s weekend win over Down, Caitrin Dobbin, increased the lead with a well taken point and the scores flowed freely as the home team pushed on and by the half time whistle they had pulled 1-13 to 0-4 ahead, Christine Laverty, Caitrin Dobbin, Lucia McNaughton, Clare McKillop and Emma McMullan among the scorers.

The second half continued in a similar vein with the county champions dominating throughout the field and despite the best efforts of Brogan Abram, Siobhan McKillop, Laura McMullan and Sinead Cosgrove the Shamrocks had just too much power as the took the first step towards retaining their league title.

Magill stars in big Glenarm win

North Antrim Junior League

SHANE O NEILLS 3-22 GLEN ROVERS ARMOY 2-07.

Pics and report by Pete Hyndman

The rain fell at the start of this game but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of these two teams who hassled and harried for 60 mins…..

Man of the match Ciaran Magill

Referee Ryan O Reilly threw the ball in and within a few seconds young Kevin O Boyle had the ball over the bar for an early lead for the home side. Liam Mulvenna doubled the lead with a nice point from 30 yards and minutes later O Boyle hit the visitors net to raise the green flag!! Armoy’s Tarlach Mc Bride hit two good points between the 7th and 10th minutes but these where cancelled out with a barrage of points from the Feystown boys. Ciaran Magill hit a brace of scores, the latter effort after a 40 yard run, Daniel Black slotted over a “65”. Magill again with two more efforts followed up with Black getting another from out on the wing from a free put the home team in charge but Mc Bride for the Glen Rovers drilled over another converted free. Just before the break Glenarm began to turn the screw as they added another 4 points, a Dan Black double, and a point each from Magill and O Boyle to put their team in command at the break.

HALFTIME SHANE O NEILLS 1-12 ARMOY -04

There was to be no let up after the short whistle as Glenarm hit 1-03 without reply, all the scores came from Daniel “Black Magic” Black, two points from 30 yards, a converted “65” and a goal after a sideline cut fell in Armoy’s box. Emmet O Hara pointed for the away team before they got a lifeline when Trevor Linton sent in a high ball which evaded Niall Hamill and nestled in the back of the Glenarm net.

Black was enjoying the freedom of the pitch and drove over another point for the local team, but Armoy’s Mc Bride hit his fourth point of the evening, before Eoin O Boyle snuck in with a goal to keep the Glen Rovers men in touch. A minute later he also bagged a point, but the second half water break gave the home side a minute to refocus. On the restart the “Wee Terrier” Kevin O Boyle drove over a point and when a high dropping ball was fumbled by Armoys keeper Joe Mc Bride (who until this moment had pulled off 4 point blank effort’s) up popped Ciaran Magill to drive the ball into the onion bag!!

Halftime sub Sean O’Boyle was next to get a Glenarm point and half forward Conal Ward pierced the evening sky as he rifled one over the bar. The last 3 points where a masterclass of hurling to watch all coming from star player Ciaran Magill. The first two he found himself in space on both wings and the latter effort was from a lung busting run darting past tackle after tackle.
