St Galls 2-16 Carey Faughs 1-7
Division 2b leaders Carey Faughs saw their unbeaten start to the season come to a grinding halt at Milltown on Sunday afternoon as St Galls stormed their way to an eleven point win. It was no more than Chris Dornan’s side deserved as they out fought their opponents in every sector of the field.
St Galls grabbed this game by the scruff of the neck from minute one, and when Connlá McCarthy swept home the games opening goal in the fifth minute, it gave the homeside an early five point lead.
Conlith McKinley opened Carey’s account in the tenth minute, but St Galls kept up the pressure and further scores from Jack Hopkins and Jackson McGreevy helped the blues to a seven point lead midway through the first half.
Carey then had their best spell of the game as Connor McBride hit three without reply and with Patrick Butler and Caolan McCaughan starting to make their greater physical presence count in midfield, the Faughs cut the arrears to four points.
However, St Galls rallied and McGreevy brought his tally to 0-6 for the half while further scores from Hopkins and Gregory McGreevy helped establish a six point lead at the interval, 1-9 to 0-6.
McBride converted an early ‘65’ for Carey but McGreevy and Tomas O’Ciarain kept the score board ticking over for St Galls before the visitors carved out two goal chances.
First McKinley shot wide with only Kurtis McGreevy to beat but, two minutes later they did manage to raise a green flag when McBride shot to the net. It meant that there was just five between them but five minutes later the game was as good as over.
Mark Napier’s pass found Ronan Carson in space and he goaled to give St Galls a commanding ten point lead.
McKinley went close for Carey again just minutes later, but this effort bounced off McGreevy’s right hand post and away to safety as the Faughs tried in vein to find a way back into the contest and it was left to McGreevy to covert a free in the last minute to give his side a deserving eleven point victory.
