Cushendun Emmets 2-17 Gort na Móna 0-11
Six points from play by centre half forward Harry Kilgore helped Cushendun to victory over Gort na Móna at CushLig an Airgid on Sunday. The centre forward hit three in each half as the home team got the better of their West Belfast visitors, but it was in the second period that the Emmet’s really got on top in this game.
Being a dual club the injuries are starting to build up for the Gorts and they were short a few regulars for their trip to the Glens. However in the opening half they matched the home team during the opening quarter and points from Ciaran McMullan, Brendan Quinn (2) and Patrick McClafferty, in reply to five from Harry Kilgore (2), Conlaoith McNeill, Conrad McDonnell and David Kilgore had the teams tied at the water break.
Three in a row from Harry Kilgore, Conrad McDonnell and ‘Loaf’ put the Emmet’s three ahead, and though free takers Quinn and McClafferty pointed for the Gorts to cut the gap back to one, a fines strike from Conor McHugh in the final minute put Cushendun 0-9 to 0-7 ahead at half time.
A strong start to the second half set Cushendun on the victory trail as a Donal O’Hara point was followed by a Conrad McDonnell goal, the groundwork done by Conor McHugh who soloed through from midfield before finding McDonnell with a deft pass. Two pointed frees in the 36th and 38th minutes from ‘Loaf’ McNeill and suddenly the gap was out to eight and McDonnell added a point on 41 minutes there was nine between the sides.
Gorts responded with points from Darren Boyd and Patrick McClafferty but Harry Kilgore hit two on the trot to restore the Emmet’s nine point cushion. Full forward Quinn pulled a couple more back for Gort na Móna but the home team finished strongly and a goal from James Morgan in the final minute put the icing on the cake for the Emmet’s
