Strong finish sees Ports take the points

ACFL Division 1

Casement’s Portglenone 1-13 O’Donovan Rossa 0-11

Casements Portglenone produced a strong finish to overcome the considerable challenge of Rossa in an exciting ACFL Division 1 encounter at Kelly Park tonight. The Shaw’s Road side, missing a few regulars, matched them for most of the way and in fact led by a point, 15 minutes into the second half.

Significantly Gerard McAleese and Michael Hagan kicked two points going into the second water break to edge the home side ahead and they pushed on strongly in the final quarter to run out winners by five points.

It was the home side who got off to the better start and Paddy Kelly fisted over after 30 seconds to give them the lead but Rossa settled quickly and Cormac McGettigan pointed them level with 5 minutes gone.

Kelly added another from a free before Ciaran Lynch screwed over an excellent point with the outside of his boot to increase the home side’s lead to two before Colm Fleming closed the gap to the minimum again when he converted a free in the 10th minute.

Rossa were holding the ball well and probing for opportunities but they got caught with a swift counter attack in the 13th minute and Niall Delargy soloed through to hammer the ball to the net and give his side a four point lead.

Connor McGhee added a point to increase that lead to five before Michael McEnhill’s free at the other end just crept over the crossbar. Michael Hagan edged Portglenone five in front once more but the visitors finished strongly with points from Eoghan McMenamin and Thomas Morgan to leave a goal between the sides at half time.

Dominic McEnhill got the visitors on their second half way with a fine point to reduce the deficit to two with Oisin Doherty replying with a similar score at the other end and the Ports might have gone further ahead but Padraig McGreevey made a timely goal line clearance to deny Ryan Convery.

Things were certainly livening up with both sides playing entertaining football and Sean Pat Donnelly struck a great point as the visitors enjoyed a period of ascendancy with Colm Fleming, Sean Pat Donnelly again and the impressive Dominic McEnhill kicking the visitors into a one point lead after 15 minutes of the half.

It was Portglenone however who hit the final two points before the water break and on the restart they began to turn the screw. Aidan McAleese and Paddy Kelly from a 40 meter free edged them three in front with McEnhill replying with what proved to be Rossa’s final score of the game.

Cioran McKenna raced clear but opted to fist over for the Casement’s and Stephen Kelly and Gerard McAleese added unanswered point to leave Portglenone five ahead at the final whistle
