Ballycastle secure place in top three

McQuillan’s Ballycastle 5.20 Cushendall 0.6

Mc Quillan’s camogs made the trip to Cushendall on Tuesday evening looking to secure their place in the top 3 of the Senior League, whilst the home side were also looking to get a much needed win. The game started at great pace with Maeve Kelly sending over 2 points in quick succession, while Aoife Toner caught a great ball on the wing and sent it over the bar. Ellen Leech responded with a brilliant point to get Cushendall off the mark, only for Caoimhe Wright to strike over for the ‘town’, with Wright and Brogan Abram both being accurate for their respective teams from the dead ball, leaving only 3 points between the teams at the water break.

Ballycastle continued to add to the pressure on the Cushendall defence with Coleen Patterson working hard to cancel out the threat of her Antrim team mate Maeve Kelly. Anna McNeill and Catriona O’Boyle also impressed in the Cushendall back line with strong performances throughout.  Aine Donnelly added Ballycastle’s 6th point with Fionnuala Kelly registering her first score straight after. This was followed by another free from Brogan Abram and a long range point from play from Sinead Cosgrove to leave only 3 points between the teams. Cushendall continued to threaten with strong play from Siobhan McKillop in midfield and Laura McMullan pushing forward, however McQuillan’s back line stood firm with fine clearances from Niamh Ann Donnelly, Emma Laverty and Catherine McShane. Cushendall played very deep leaving Niamh Donnelly to sweep, lumping pressure on the Cushendall end. The scores came for McQuillan’s with Maeve Kelly adding 2 more from play and Caoimhe Wright registering 1.01 before the break leaving the half time score at 1.10 to 0.4.

The second half was keenly contested and while the scoreline shows McQuillan’s running out on top, there were many positives for the home side. Cailin Quinn had a busy time in nets and while Niamh O Neill struck a hat trick, Maeve Kelly added a well-deserved goal after Cailin had pulled off many brilliant saves. Scores from Caoimhe Wright, Caitlin Heggarty and Fionnuala Kelly added to the total for the town with Brogan Abram and Laura McMullan pointing one apiece for Cushendall.
