Ulster Senior Camogie Championship semi-final
Antrim 3-10 Derry 1-09
Antrim overcome Derry in Saturday’s ulster Senior Camogie semi-final at Fr Healy Park, Loughgiel to set up their third final meeting in six months with All Ireland champions Down next weekend.
This is a game that will not live long in the memory but after an uneventful opening quarter the Saffons led but 0-3 to 0-1 without ever getting out of first gear. The fast running surface of Fr Healy Park seemed to catch the Antrim girls out as ball after ball, which was sent in to their highly dangerous full forward line, had generally too much pace on them and ran wide of goals.
After the water break things did improve and when player of the match Caitrin Dobbin grabbed her team’s first goal they always seemed to have matters in hand and pushed on to lead by 10 at the half time whistle.
The strong breeze left those in attendance wondering if ten points was enough, and when Derry started the second half strongly with three points in a row we there appeared to be genuine hope for the visitors.
However when Roisin McCormick soloed in along the endline to ‘bat’ a ball to the Derry net the comeback was thwarted. Derry did make another push late in the game when the introduction of subs on both teams seemed to upset the balance of things.
Points from Eimear McGuigan, Maria Rafferty and Aine McGill, plus and excellent goal from Megan Kerr, changed the complexion of the scoreboard and reduced the 13 point gap down to just seven, but Kerr’s goal was to be the last score of the game as Antrim secured a place in next weekend’s final against Down.
