McKiernan goal sends Cargin on their way to convincing win

Reserve Football Shield (group one)

Erin’s Own Cargin 4-16 St Mary’s Aghagallon 0-09

A 3rd minute goal by Ryan Mc Kiernan from a well laid counter attack set the seal for victory for Cargin as they proved too strong for the visiting Aghagallon in the Senior reserve Cup competition on Friday evening.

The big full forward finished to the net after Gerard Mc Corley’s and Shane Gribbon combined to provide the opportunity.

The Toome men quickly added a brace of points through Jack Mc Allister and Eunan Quinn  before Paudie McLaughlin arrived from his defensive duties to add a 12th minute goal.

The visitors opened account in the 13th minute with a smart Jack Nelson delivery from away out on the right and Michael McStravick added another to provide impetus for the St Mary’s men at the end of the opening quarter.

Cargin were soon back on the offensive again with Odhran Molloy and Eunan Quinn dominating the central zone and back to back points from Paudie McLaughlin, and Shane Gribbon saw them move 2-06 to 0-02 ahead again.

The visitors were finding it difficult to navigate a way through a strong Cargin defence where Gerard McCann, Gerard McCorley  and Tony Scullion were dominant.

The visitors finished the latter stages strongly with Michael Mc Stravick, Aaron Henry and Stephen Brannigan on target but Shane Gribbon replied with a couple and another from the impressive McKiernan left the home side 2-08 to 0-05 ahead at half time.

Aghagallon needed a good start to the second half if they were to get back into contention but it was Cargin who continued to dominate and  a Gerard McCann delivery opened the way for Ryan (Podgy) Mc Kiernan to increase his personal haul with a 32nd minute point.

Aghagallon replied with points from Jack Nelson and Michael Mc Stravick which sandwiched a Peadar Mc Keever effort for the home side but although the visitors battled hard they were finding it difficult to break down a resilient home defence where Orrin and Malachi Johnston excelled throughout.

Jack Mc Allister split the posts just prior to the second water break before replacement Michael Clarke signalled his arrival with a 46th minute goal and that was about that.

The Toome men controlled the latter stages although the arrival of replacement Daniel Hannon did add impetus to the Aghagallon cause but the final minutes would see the home side continue on the ascendancy.

Replacement, Darren Craig, added a point to Cargin’s increasing advantage with fellow late arrivals Odhran Mc Guckin adding another and PJ Quinn bagged a smart 59th minute goal and it was all over at this stage.

Aghagallon had the last say when replacement Daniel Hannon sent the hard grafting Pat Brannigan in for an injury time point but this was merely a consolation score as the home side breasted the winning line full value for their 4-16 to  0-09 winning scoreline.
